Can you believe that Darrol Henry turned eight months old on Saturday? My little guy is getting so big! He can sit himself up all by himself now, and I’ve been trying to branch out with him in the homemade baby food department. This week he started blueberries! No matter what I feed him, though, this instant oatmeal has basically become a breakfast staple around our house.
He’s been eating oatmeal for a while, but before discovering this trick, I was pureeing the oats into oat flour, then cooking them up in a big batch. You have to stir constantly for 10-15 minutes, because otherwise you end up with a clumpy mess. Conventional wisdom is that you also can’t freeze homemade baby food oatmeal, but I used to. Until I discovered that you can make instant oats insanely easily.
When I visited my mom over the summer, she picked up lots of pre-made baby food for Darrol. I am all about homemade baby food, but when I’m traveling, I really don’t want to have to worry about it. She got us lots of purees, and she also picked up a box of baby food oatmeal. Here was the revelation: to make homemade instant oatmeal, all you had to do was add water! No cooking, no 10-15 minutes of constant stirring. Powder + water = breakfast!
Seriously, I was floored. I was also determined to figure this out. The ingredients were just oats and then lots of vitamins. Surely, if Earth’s Best or whatever could make this, so could I.
When I got home from Ft. Lauderdale, I grabbed some organic quick oats and dumped them into my Vitamix. I blended. And blended. And blended. Way past the oat flour stage, until the oats started to be more like powdered sugar in consistency. I added a little water to a small scoop of oats and tasted it. And it tasted just like the ones we got at home!
I kind of feel like a cheater even calling this a recipe, but just for posterity, here it is.
Homemade Instant Oatmeal
I made this in my Vitamix, and I’m not sure how it would work in a regular blender. If you try, let me know how it goes!
- 2 cups organic quick-cooking oats
- Put the oats into the blender, and puree on high until you have a super fine powder. You can store these in a clean, dry glass jar in the fridge for up to a week.
- To make a serving: mix one part oat puree with one part water, and stir. You can add more water to thin it out, depending on what consistency your baby prefers.
