After this week’s cold snap, I’ve been on the lookout for warm-your-bones cocktails, and this hot buttered rum recipe is so nice on a chilly evening. It’s strong, steamy, and clears those sinuses right out. Do you guys have any favorite warm cocktails? I have a feeling we are in for at least one more cold front before this winter calls it quits!
Wait…so how do you make hot buttered rum without butter? The same way that you make butterless bulletproof coffee: use coconut oil!
I used a little bit less rum than a traditional hot buttered rum recipe, because I’m sort of a lightweight. You can add an extra ounce of booze to your hot buttered rum, if you like!
Hot Buttered Rum: Mug Size
None of the recipes I looked at when sorting out this hot buttered rum recipe were very specific about the rum to water ratio, and I think that what you choose really depends on how strong you want your drink to be.
I chose a small mug that holds about 1 cup of liquid. If you want to make yours more diluted, grab an oversized cappucchino mug instead. The bigger the mug, the more water you’ll use, so keep your tastes in mind when you’re choosing your mug for this recipe.
Vegan Hot Buttered Rum
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil at room temperature
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 2 ounces white rum
- boiling water
- Grab your mug (see above about mug sizes), and use a fork to cream together the coconut oil and brown sugar. Add the rum and whisk the ingredients together. I wasn’t able to get this totally mixed, but do what you can.
- Top off your mug with your boiling water and serve hot.
