You don’t need artificial colors and flavors to get hydrated! You can make a healthy, tasty homemade sports drink with just two ingredients.
I developed this homemade sports drink recipe years ago when I was going through marathon training with my running partner. It’s just as nice after a regular workout, though! It’s also just a nice, cooling whole-fruit treat on a hot day.
Back when I was marathon training, we had a brutal summer in Atlanta. That, combined with my running schedule, meant that for weeks it felt like I just couldn’t drink enough. Water helped short term, but I felt like I was operating in a perpetual state of thirst. It was no good for my endurance and frankly a little annoying.
My old running partner’s dad is a doctor, and he suggested that I needed more electrolytes. He recommended Gatorade. That’s a totally reasonable recommendation, but I’m not crazy about a drink full of artificial colors and added sugars, and those low cal sports drinks are sweetened with artificial sweeteners. No, thank you!
I turned to Facebook for suggestions, and the two natural sources for an electrolyte boost that I saw over and over were watermelon and coconut water. Coconut water is not my favorite thing to drink, but guys. Put some watermelon cubes into the blender WITH your coconut water, and you have got a refreshing, delicious homemade sports drink with no added sugars. It really did the trick!
