I believe the rule of thumb is 3 feet. It's not a law, but there are bikers working on making it one, if I understand correctly.

Since when did a Mercedes weigh "a couple of tons"? I mean, I understand his point but it is best to not be overstated when trying to make points to Senators. The point is just as valid without exaggeration.

Ya know, I'm not sure! I usually drive behind them slowly until I can pass them with a bunch of room. I think there are laws in some places about how much room you're supposed to leave, but I don't know about here. I know I am much less scared if the car passing me is going slowly and leaving a bit of space.

Ugh, what a jerk. I wish there were more (and bigger) bike lanes in Atlanta. It scares me too much to ride my bike around here!

Speaking of bikes, what is the proper etiquette (or law) when you come alongside a bike but you are blocked on the left to pass with plenty of space? I usually drive slowly behind the cyclist until I am able to pass but I don't know if this is annoying or if it is better if I drive past, with a little less than the desired amount of space. (I apologize if this is an ignorant question! I figured you would be a good person to ask since you ride your bike on busy streets more than I do.)
