Ponoko Photomake: Greenwashing?

A few folks have linked me to Ponoko Photomake. I think it’s a pretty cool idea, but I’m not really a fan of the execution. The idea is that they turn your drawing or photo into a real life piece, sourcing the materials and cutting the pieces for you from plastic. Yep: plastic. That last thing is why I was a little surprised to see them written up on Treehugger. I wrote a bit more over on SuperCute! about it. What do you guys think? Am I overreacting?

Hey there Becky,
Thanks so much for taking the time to talk about this.
I have added comments over on SuperCute! and here:

Thanks for the links! I’m glad to see that you guys are making sure folks don’t submit copyrighted works. That’s a relief!
I have to admit that I’m still stuck on the materials angle. I work so hard to find ways to avoid new materials where I can, it’s a bummer to see folks sourcing brand new. Especially when the brand new material is a petroleum product. :(
Yeah I hear you, for sure :) In my comments on Treehugger you’ll see we are rolling a solution. Hope you will be able to follow it and comment – or perhaps better still contact me and we can work on it together ;)
I may just take you up on that!
I’ve got to say that I’m really impressed with the dialogue you’ve opened up…most companies wouldn’t pay my little blog posts any mind at all.
We’re just a tiny team of people trying to do good. This is important to us! :)
