Changes to the CPSIA: Good News for Thrift Stores
Finally, some good news about the CPSIA! Now if only some language like this would make it in there for handmade toys. There is a rule being proposed that would exclude toys made from natural materials (pdf – see page 4), but I’m not so good at deciphering legalese, and the wording is a bit tricky. Maybe one of you lawery types would have an easier time of it?
So here’s the good news:
The new law requires that domestic manufacturers and importers certify that children’s products made after February 10 meet all the new safety standards and the lead ban. Sellers of used children’s products, such as thrift stores and consignment stores, are not required to certify that those products meet the new lead limits, phthalates standard or new toy standards.
Take Action
This amendment to exclude thrift stores and toy resellers is better than nothing, but handmade toys still need your help. Get heard! Vote for a handmade toy amendment to the act over on Change.gov. It looks like the CPSC has extended the deadline to commend on the CPSIA to January 30th, as well, so comment away if you haven’t already!
