Friday Roundup: Green Smoothies!

OK, so I’ve been sort of unofficially doing the Green Smoothie Challenge that I heard about on Happy Foody. Green smoothies are just like your regular ol smoothie, but full of super healthy raw greens! To start, you’ll use more fruit than greens, gradually upping the greens content as your palette gets used to the taste.

I’ve been loving how I feel when I start the day with these smoothies and its deepend my love for our Magic Bullet.

I’ll admit that I was on the fence about making a green smoothie, but a few folks really helped sway my opinion. Here’s a roundup of green smoothies that I hope will get you in the mood, too!

  1. Kittee’s quest for the perfect green smoothies recipe is definitely what first piqued my interest about them. The first one I made was based on this recipe.
  2. I really want to try one like this from Vegan Foodie. She uses escarole and carrots!
  3. No green smoothie round up would be complete without a recipe from the Happy Foody! I just love her suggestion for using a jar as a to go container! You can even make them in advance this way, if you don’t have a lot of time in the mornings.
  4. This is one I made last week, and it’s probably my favorite so far. I added flax meal to keep me full longer, and it had great effects on the texture that I hadn’t anticipated! Here’s the recipe for this one:

Green Smoothie
1 banana
1 pear, cubed
small handful of flat leaf parsley
handful of kamatsuna greens (you could substitute turnip greens, spinach, or kale here if you want)
8 ice cubes
1T flax meal
hemp milk to cover

Toss everything into one of the cup attachments from the Magic Bullet. Blend until smooth!

I really like using the Magic Bullet for these. It creates so much less mess than a blender, since your blender is also your cup!

One last thing: I’ve been trying to include parsley in my smoothies, because they have a ton of crazy health benefits. That’s been the toughest part for me. Rachel from Coconut Lime suggested using flat leaf parsley instead of the curly sort, and I’ve got to say I can taste the difference! Recommended!
