Vegan Month of Food 2009

Vegan MOFO III

The Vegan Month of Food (Vegan MOFO) is here! For the whole month of October, vegan food bloggers across the internet are going to be talking about the awesomeness of vegan eats! If you want to check out the other participating blogs, Kittee has a list right over here along with a little more info on the MOFO!

I thought it would be fun to kick things off over here with the story of how I ended up going vegan.

Years ago, I had a physical and it turned out that I had high cholesterol. Like, really high. Something like 250? The doctors wanted to put me on meds, which freaked me out. I was 25! No way. Instead, I decided to try to fix this situation by changing my diet. I was pescatarian at the time and cut out eggs and dairy (but not seafood). In just a few months, my cholesterol was normal. It was like magic!

In the meantime, I’d been doing some reading. When you start looking for vegan recipes, it’s hard to miss the info about how things like dairy get from farm to table. The more I read, the more I realized that I wanted no part in any of that and decided to stick with the no eggs or dairy thing.

Not too long after that, seafood started making me feel just…gross. Grosser every time I ate it. Between that and the articles I was reading about overfishing, mercury, and bycatch it felt like time to just do this thing.

I gave it a shot and haven’t looked back. It was so much easier than I thought it would be. I know veganism seems like a really extreme lifestyle choice, and I hope that the Vegan Month of Food helps folks see that it’s not about deprivation and willpower. It’s about cupcakes, animal rights, and loving the planet!

  1. I had a cholesterol of 300 when I was only six years old! No joke. It’s so nice to be vegan and not have to worry about it. I wish people would just be smart like you and change their diet rather than going on medication.

  2. Wow…I’m glad to hear that a change in diet worked for you, too! 300 at age six is intense. Did your doctor put you on medication, or did your folks try alternatives like diet and exercise?

As I typed that is sort of struck me…Isn’t it strange that eating well and exercising are “alternatives?”

  3. that’s funny, i got a “high normal” (whatever that is) result when i was 18 or 19. that started me on my journey to veganism, i just didn’t know it at the time.
