Blog Action Day 2009: Climate Change and the Little Things

Blog Action Day 2009Today is Blog Action Day, and this year’s topic is climate change! All across the internet, folks are posting their thoughts about the issue, so I thought I’d join the party.

The thing that bums me out when I read posts online about climate change is the comment section. It feels like half the time, a climate skeptic comments and then the discussion sort of devolves into a semantic argument. At that point, nothing productive is happening, and we need to get productive and get moving!

So here are my thoughts: yes, I think that climate change is real, but even if I’m wrong it doesn’t really matter. It turns out you don’t have to even be on board with the idea of global warming to see that we need to act and we need to do it now.

So many actions that help fight climate change also help us live happier, healthier lives. Adapting alternative energy like wind and solar means cleaner air and water and an end to mountaintop removal mining for coal. There are so many choices like this that mean not just less CO2 in the atmosphere but also mean cleaner air, cleaner water, and healthier, happier people!

Cutting out or avoiding animal products would make a huge impact on the world’s food supply. Instead of growing grains to feed to livestock, which is terribly inefficient, we could be growing food crops to feed ourselves directly.

Even something as walking or cycling instead of driving a car has a huge impact beyond reducing your carbon footprint. These are habits that are good for your body as well as the planet. Fewer cars on the road would mean less air and water pollution.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that it’s time to stop debating and just get active! Even if you can’t commit to big lifestyle changes, I’m a firm believer that every little bit counts!

  1. Amen, sister.

Even if climate change is completely natural, not man-made, there’s still lots of other things we are screwing up environmentally because of our actions. The changes we make are beneficial regardless.

  2. Every little bit does count! Blog Action Day’s topic this year rocks–I have a post forthcoming over at the ALTA Language blog I write for it. It was a fun & topical topic to work on!

  3. Oh cool! Jes, send me the post, and I’ll add it to my list of links at the bottom of this one!
