My biggest challenge lately has been finding good music for my morning yoga. I’m a little embarrased to say that my go to lately has been The Velvet Underground – Andy Warhol. This is a stellar album but not really the soothing tunes that help me quiet my thoughts and focus on the poses.

Before turning to VU, I was listening to Om Lounge 2, which felt like a better fit. One morning, though, Dave said that if he woke up to that album one more time he might go crazy. So that one’s been shelved.

I posted my music problem over at Virtual Yoga Buddies, and Tobi suggested finding a Pandora station, but here’s where I make my next embarrassing confession: Pandora is a little confusing to me! It seems to want an artist to find suggestions, but I’m looking more for a genre, maybe?

Lately, I’ve been just practicing without music, but I really like something going on in the background to help keep my brain quiet.

So, all of this was a really round-about way of asking you guys if you listen to while you’re doing yoga! Does anyone have suggestions?

I did do a little searching on Amazon and came across a few things that look alright, but it would be awesome to hear your thoughts before picking something up! Here’s what I’m looking at:

OK, and a final embarrassing confession – I am really a fan of classic rock (much to certain folks’ dismay). All this ambient techno stuff is great, but really I’ll take The Who or Led Zeppelin over Moby pretty much any day of the week. Is there anything out there that’s yoga-appropriate for someone with musical taste that borders on cheesy?

You know who I bet would be good for yoga is David Gray.

  2. Tracy says:

Maybe Grooveshark.com would help. You can put a genre in and then click on Playlists and find one you like. :c)

    Thanks, guys!

Levi – I’m not familiar with David Gray, but I’ll check him out on Blip!
Tracy – That sounds like what I thought Pandora would do! I’ll definitely try it!

You can do pandora – search spa or yoga, etc. There are ways to search by genre. Let me know if you find it, or I can help more :)

My favorite Indian music yoga album is Breathe by Krishna Das, you might like it! I made a copy of an Air album for my sister to use in class (she teaches) I felt so bad when she told me that the song “Sexy Boy” was not appropriate for class! Billy Breathes by Phish is works well. I have totally rocked out to Santana and Devendra Banhart too.

Thanks, Tobi! I might hit you up. :)

Lazy Smurf – That Air album is great for music, though I could see Sexy Boy not going over well in mixed company. We have got to have a copy of Billy Breathes around here somewhere!

yeah the whole thing is pretty mellow, Story of the Ghost works to if you take out Guyute!

Zero 7 is such a good choice! They’re my go-to band for something warm and comforting. My boyfriend called them “easy listening”, lol. Thievery Corporation is another good choice (Mirror Conspiracy would be my album recommendation) and Telepopmusik is beautiful (Genetic World is my album rec.).

  9. Becky says:

Haha! LazySmurf, I could actually almost see myself digging Guyute during standing balances or something! Though it might be a little distracting.

Thanks, Steph! I just love them. They came through town not too long ago, didn’t they? And how could I forget Thievery Corp! I’ve got to raid Dave’s library. Those are great options!

What about Sigur Ros? You’d probably have to make a mix to pick songs that are tempo oriented because their stuff can be pretty wild.
A new teacher at my studio has been rocking the Disney tunes. Not my favorite, but it’s better than some of that changing stuff. Good luck… maybe browse the CD reviews over at Yoga Journal. Another band I really love that’s unintrusive is The Notwist.

Oooh, I just love Sigur Ros! I was thinking yesterday that Ray LaMontagne might be good, too!
