I’ve been feeling not-so-hot this week. A nagging sore throat and stuffy nose have me wanting to sleep in and skip my practice. It seems like folks are divided on whether it’s best to push through with your yoga when you’re feeling a little worn down or if you should hit the snooze instead.

Rather than totally blowing of my practice this week, I tried to find gentle, relaxing poses to help clear my head and give my immune system a little boost. This series took about 30 minutes:

Hold each pose for up to 30 seconds….listen to your body.

  1. Lotus Pose – some gentle neck rolls are nice here
  2. Switch up your feet in lotus, so the opposite foot is on top, and do some alternate nostril breathing. The link recommends doing 3-5 cycles, but I think I did closer to 8-10.
  3. Cat pose
  4. Cow pose
  5. Downward Dog
  6. Big Toe pose
  7. Tree Stand
  8. Wide Legged Forward Bend
  9. Gate
  10. Wide Angle Seated Forward Bend
  11. Child’s pose
  12. Reclined Twist
  13. Legs Up the Wall
  14. Corpse pose/Relaxation

So what do you guys think about doing yoga (or exercising in general) when you’re feeling under the weather?

It depends on how sick you are and what kind of sick. I think if you are just a bit under the weather, yoga is bound to perk you up. Hope you are feeling better, Miss Becky!

  2. Becky says:

That makes sense, Patti. And thanks for the well-wishes!

David Williams (Ashtanga yogi) says that if you’re sick, you should do a gentle practice until you feel like you’re at your energetic peak, then rest in savasana. Don’t ask if thats what I did when I had the flu. I did a lot of savasana, though!

Oooh I love that idea, Lisa! Thank you for sharing!
