The Salad Bowl: A Simple Container Garden

Joan and Ron Baune created these lovely lettuce gardens to help urban gardeners with small spaces grow their own veggies. The Baunes sell their salad bowls, but this awesome video shows you how to create your very own!

I love it! These Salad Bowls sort of remind me of the themed gardens my mom’s school planted. One year, they did a pizza garden where they planted tomatoes, basil, peppers, and other pizza-themed veggies and herbs. When it was time to harvest, they made their very own pizzas! It really got the kids engaged in the whole growing and cooking process, and it got them excited about veggies at the same time.

I think the Salad Bowls would be a great way to get kids excited about greens. Kids definitely are more likely to eat their veggies if they grew them themselves!

  1. Thanks for sharing this! I can’t do my full garden this year because I am moving and am trying to find ideas for easily moveable gardens. This will be perfect!

  2. oh, awesome! I’d love to see pictures when you get some lettuces going!

  3. This is such a fun idea, and I love that it’s so small scale. I want to have a garden (and have space for a big one), but it’s such an intimidating idea. These ones seem more doable to me!

  4. It makes me wonder if there are any other small gardens you could do! Maybe a salsa garden with scallions, cherry tomatoes, and jalapenos?

  5. How fun! It’s too cold to plant anything here yet. My husband and I are compensating by growing sprouts on our windowsill.

So neat! I wonder though how many bugs will enjoy eating the leaves.

  7. This looks like such fun! And how adorable, thanks for sharing.
