Nathalie Brault is a fellow Eco Etsian, a knitter of reclaimed yarn, a seamstress and a jeweler. She’s also an avid collector of vintage materials and my very first 5 questions interviewee! Welcome, Nathalie!

1. Tell me about how you got started crafting.
I started crafting at a very young age with my grandmother. She use to work very hard on week days and Saturdays, and on Sunday mornings we’d spend them in bed and she’d teach me knitting, cross stitching, rug knitting, and more. And every week I would look forward to my Sunday lessons with my grandmother so I would learn some more and do something new & beautiful. And as I grew up, and became a woman, I continued learning new crafts, and I learned these crafts in books I read everywhere I could find them. I’m a fast learner. I must add that with the the coming of the Internet later on in my life, I kept on learning new things everyday because the Internet is the perfect base to learn anything. So I made it my teacher. And I’m still learning new things.

2. What draws you to eco-friendly materials?
The possibility to make something new out of it and that someone may use it again. It appeals to me because if someone can use it, it means that they will fall in love with it and that my work will be appreciated.

The beauty of eco-friendly materials is that it had a life before, so you can imagine what it was while you are working with it and try to incorporate that into the new piece.

3. What inspires you?
It all started with a visit in a Montreal store about 20 years ago. They sold fashionable recycled clothing. And I was absolutely hooked. I started selling my collection in their store for about 4-5 years. And then after back problems and 3 back surgeries I had to rethink the way I worked and how to make money. And that’s how Recupefashion was born.

4. Who are your crafty heroes?
Martha Stewart just to name one.

5. Where can folks find your work?
On Etsy at Recupefashion, Recupefashionnstuff, and Beautyrecycle.
