Oh, Vegan Mofo, I am sad that today is the end! Once again, I spent the month drooling over a Google Reader full of delicious vegan recipes and beautiful food photos.
On Saturday we had our tree trimming party, and it was super fun! I had a bit too much wine and forgot to take photos of the actual tree trimming part, but I did get some shots of the snacks before our guests arrived! I’ll have to get some tree pictures later on, because our tree is awesome. Almost all of our ornaments are ones our friends made at this year’s and previous years’ tree trimmings, and they are spectacular!
If you don’t already, I highly recommend an ornament-making table at your next tree trimming. It’s a great ice breaker if your guests don’t all know each other, and the results are always so much more personal than something you’d pick up at the big box store. This year, we made ornaments using my stashes of salvaged wine corks and fabric scraps.
Before folks arrived, I cooked my staple party snacks: vegan pigs in blankets and a vegan cheeseball. The thing I had the most fun making, though, was this (admittedly pitiful) yin yang out of ketchup and mustard:
Both snacks are super easy.
Vegan Pigs in Blankets
To make the pigs in blankets, you just need a pack of veggie dogs and a tube of vegan crescent rolls. Many of the crescent roll tubes you’ll find at the grocery store are vegan, so just check ingredients until you find one. Cut each crescent roll in half lengthwise, cut the dogs in half width-wise, then roll up the mini dogs in the dough and bake according to the crescent rolls directions. Keep an eye on them, since sometimes they’ll finish up a bit early.
The cheeseball is pretty simple, too. Just mix up a package of vegan cream cheese with some dried cranberries, a tablespoon or two of herbes de Provence, a pinch of smoked salt, and some black pepper. Chill for 30 minutes or up to over night, and just before your guests arrive, shape it into a ball and cover it with sliced almonds.
YUM! Snacky foods are probably my favorite foods. We don’t usually eat this kind of junk food around here, but I love making junk food for company! Have you guys been doing any fun, holiday cooking?
