Got a gift-giving occasion coming up? Instead of wrapping your gift in paper that’s headed straight to the bin, you can make the wrapping part of the present with a beautiful, handmade furhoshiki.

The folks at C&T Publishing were kind enough to send me a review copy of their latest book: Furoshiki Faric Wraps, and I’m smitten! If you’re not familiar with furoshiki, it’s a Japanese method for wrapping gifts and packages that uses knotted fabric instead of paper and tape. The basic furoshiki is pretty simple: a large square piece of fabric. From there, you can really get fancy!

The book not only gets into the different folding methods for wrapping different gifts (books, bottles, even plants!), but there’s a big section on how to make your own furoshiki. The DIY section includes ideas for all skill levels, even folks with no sewing skills at all.

If you’ve already got a furoshiki and aren’t sure how to tie it up, I found this chart of basic folds over at Notcot:

The book gives a lot more detail, including some folds I’ve never seen–like one to carry a watermelon! It also has suggestions on how to design and print your own custom fabric for your furoshiki wraps, either by hand or through printing services.

Furoshiki Faric Wraps is only $15 through Amazon, and there’s also an e-book version. The review copy they sent me was for iPad, and it’s beautiful and convenient! Plus, when you get an ebook, you save even more paper, right?
