homemade sports drink

It has been h-o-t here in Atlanta, and that combined with my running schedule has meant that for weeks it’s felt like I just can’t drink enough. Water helps short term, but I felt like I was operating in a perpetual state of thirst. It was no good for my endurance and frankly a little annoying.

My running partner’s dad is a doctor, and he suggested that I might need more electrolytes. He recommended Gatorade. That’s a totally reasonable recommendation, but I’m not crazy about a drink full of artificial colors and added sugars, and those low cal sports drinks are sweetened with artificial sweeteners. No, thank you!

I turned to Facebook for suggestions, and the two natural sources for an electrolyte boost that I saw over and over were watermelon and coconut water. Coconut water is not my favorite thing to drink, but then a genius friend mentioned that she had been tossing watermelon cubes into the blender with coconut water. This, I had to dry!

The result is refreshing, vaguely tropical, and has definitely helped me feel more hydrated in this summer heat. Here’s the super simple recipe!

Watermelon Coconut Water Homemade Sports Drink

Ingredients

  • 1 cup watermelon cubes
  • 1/2 cup coconut water

Directions

Place the ingredients in the blender, and blend until smooth.

Here’s my homemade sports drink in the Mason jar to go cup that I made last week:

Watermelon and coconut sounds tasty. Sugar and salt help your body absorb the water faster, so these drinks really do help keep us more hydrated. Plus its always easier to drink more of something that tastes good. Lately I’ve been making a watermelon-lime sports drink recipe.
