5 Questions with Cardboard Artist Kirsty Fletcher

Australian artist Kirsty Fletcher creates beautiful sculpture and collage from reclaimed cardboard. Kirsty, with a little help from her friends and family, salvages her materials from their recycling bins and the side of the road, and she transforms these found objects into adorable art pieces. Beautiful art that diverts waste from the landfill? Don’t mind if I do!

Kirsty was kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions about her work and what inspires her!

1. Tell me about how you got started crafting.

I have been crafting all my life with knitting, hand sewing, jewelry making and very crappy carpentry as a kid. I study art at school and then trained as an architect which included making cardboard models of buildings.

2. What draws you to eco-friendly materials?

I think deep down I am a hoarder. I hate throwing out useful things. It helps that I also love the brown insides of boxes and the coloured printed parts of packaging.

3. What inspires you?

Other artists, children, pop culture, the animals around me, kids’ story books – all the fun things really.

4. Who are your crafty heroes?

Creative people who can make amazing things, especially when they are quick, and who make things I didn’t even know were possible. I have a lot of creative people around me who are awesome: my mum and sister, my next-door neighbour (who is pretty much my 2nd sister) and her beautiful mother. I also love the CWA (Country women’s association) people (like my grandma) who can quilt and make chocolates and crochet slippers all with their eyes closed.

5. Where can folks find your work?

I try and have 1 or 2 solo exhibitions each year (generally in Melbourne, Australia) and get involved in numerous group shows also (again these have been in Australia). On the web the best place to see my work is on my blog.
