Vegan MoFo 2012vegan cereal bowls

The spotlight on vegan crafters continues! It’s been super fun learning more about my favorite vegan crafty superstars.

Jeanette Zeis is a fellow Atlanta crafter, and I’m a huge fan of her work. I’ve got one of her serving dishes, a miniature cupcake stand, one of her ceramic to go mugs in my cupboard, and I use them all the time. She operates a couple of pottery businesses: The Vegan Dish and Vessles and Wares. She creates beautiful, handmade pottery in vibrant colors with lots of hand-drawn and hand-stamped details.

Jeanette is a vegan crafter, an avid runner, and super nice to boot. Check our her answers to the 5 questions below!

1. Tell me about how you got started crafting.

Crafting is in my genetic pool, I think. I was lucky to grow up in a home with lots of crayon and construction paper. Surrounded by paintings, quilts and embroidery created by relatives.

2. What draws you to eco-friendly materials?

Clay is not necessarily all that eco-friendly. It is mined. And the firing process requires quite a bit of energy. I do try to be mindful that the end product is meant to last a lifetime and is not a disposable item. Outside of that, I try to keep my own personal life eco-friendly: car-free, vegan {duh!}, recycle my recyclables, keep consumption low…

3. What inspires you?

I love knowing that my work is used to create special moments in the lives of others. Will they serve a gorgeous cake for an upcoming party on one of my cake stands? Will they automatically grab the “vegan” mug out of the cabinet for their morning coffee? I’m inspired by these moments.

4. Who are your crafty heroes?

Anybody that can take an ordinary/throwaway object and transform it into something unexpected.

5. Where can folks find your work?

On Etsy at The Vegan Dish and Vessels and Wares and on my website.
