These handmade snack bags used to be part of my line when I was selling my crafts, and they’re perfect for packing dry snacks without the wasteful plastic. Here’s how to make a snack bag of your very own!
You’ll notice that these bags are not lined with any kind of oil cloth or nylon, which means if you put something wet in there, there’s a good chance that they will leak. Why use all fabric, you ask? I am yet to find a leak-proof fabric that’s not coated in plastic, and I try to keep my crafting plastic free as much as possible, especially when the finished product will be touching food. The only plastic in these bags is the closure. You could use a button or zipper instead of Velcro to make this totally plastic free.
How to Make a Snack Bag
- OneÂ 8″ X 13.5″ piece of vintage or organic fabric
- One 8″ X 13.5″ piece of organic fabric – I use organic fabric for the lining, because it’s going to be touching the food.
- One 8″ piece of Velcro
- pinking shears
- Usual sewing stuff: iron, straight pins, sewing machine and thread
1. Iron your pieces of fabric, then place them wrong sides together and pin along the short edges.
2. Sew theÂ short edges of your fabric with your sewing machine using a 1/8″ seam allowance, then flip the tube you’ve created so that it’s right side out. Iron again, so you end up with a nice clean line at the top and bottom
3. Separate that piece of velcro, so you have two pieces: one with the rough plastic “hooks” and one with the softer felt.
4. Pin the hook piece of Velcro 1/8″ from the top edge across the lining side of your fabric.
5. Pin the felt piece of Velcro 1/8″ from the bottom edgeÂ across the other lining side of your fabric, then sew the Velcro pieces in place by sewing a line of stitches at the top and bottom of each piece of Velcro, all the way across, using thread that’s very close in color to your Velcro, so for the bag at the top you’d use white thread.
6. Fold up your snack bag wrong sides out, lining up the top and bottom edges. The Velcro pieces should be on the outside now, and you want to make sure they’re aligned, so the bag will close properly. Â Iron again, making sure that the second layer of fabric doesn’t bunch up.
7. Sew both unfinished sides of your fabric using a 1/2″ seam allowance, then use your pinking shears to cut off any excess fabric on those edges.
8. Flip the bag right side out and iron it again.
That’s it! You’re ready to use your snack bag for cookies, crackers, dried fruit, etc!
