This shrub recipe is simple, sweet, and tangy all at once!
A vinegar cocktail might sound a little bit weird, but the sweet orange and earthy rosemary in this shrub recipe go deliciously with tangy vinegar. Shrubs date all the way back to colonial America, and this sweet orange-rosemary shrub recipe combines yummy winter flavors in a tall, bubbly glass.
If you’ve never had a shrub before, you’re in for a treat. You can make this recipe with or without the booze. Without, it’s a sort of sweet and sour soda. For this cocktail, I’m dusting off and revamping a shrub recipe that I shared last February over at Care2. I’d actually forgotten about shrubs until my friend Jerry shared a delicious recipe for cinnamon-orange drinking vinegar not too long ago.
I loved that Jerry added a dash of spice to his shrub, so I decided to take his lead and include herbs in my own. The result was super delicious, and I hope you’ll give this shrub recipe a go!
One important caveat: This is a perfect New Year’s Eve cocktail recipe, but if you’re preparing this for a holiday party, you want to make it the day before. Any shrub recipe is going to make the house smell like vinegar, and prepping the day before gives the smell time to fade before guests arrive.
Orange-Rosemary Shrub Recipe
If you don’t do the boozy thing, just skip the vodka in this recipe and use the shrub syrup to make yummy homemade soda!
Yield: about 12 cocktails
- 1 cup orange juice (or citrus juice of your choice)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 medium sprigs of fresh rosemary
- good vodka (optional)
- seltzer water
- To make the shrub: In a small pan on medium-low heat, combine all of the ingredients except for the vodka. Cook, stirring, for 10 minutes. Strain the shrub into a heat-safe glass jar (like a mason jar), and let the mixture cool to room temperature.
- Fill a tall glass with ice, and add 1/4 cup of the shrub, and 1 ounce vodka. Top the glass off with the seltzer, give it a good stir, and serve with a fresh sprig of rosemary.
