Cranberry Cocktail with Booze-Soaked Cherries

Cranberry Cocktail with Boozy CherriesThis cranberry cocktail features boozy cherries and a little bit of fizz.

When the folks at Spodee contacted me about their Wine with a Kick, I was definitely intrigued. I sent them Barnivore’s Ask a Company page, and after my contact assured me that Spodee uses all vegan ingredients I agreed to try out their kicky wine for a review.

Note: The recipe below uses Spodee, but you can substitute sweet vermouth in its place if you can’t find Spodee at the liquor store.

Spodee

The back of the bottle calls the Spodee Wine & Shine that they sent me “grape wine with natural chocolate flavor.” This stuff sort of reminds me of sweet vermouth, but with a chocolatey edge. I tried a glass of Spodee on the rocks, and it was a little bit too sweet for my taste, but I thought it would be perfect mixed up in a Friday Cocktail!

I did a little bit of research on sweet vermouth cocktails and found this one at Serious Eats that looked like a great jumping-off point for mixing Spodee.

I was thinking about how to use this stuff all evening, and I was actually in bed when I realized that soaking dried cherries in Spodee and adding some sour unsweetened cranberry juice would be freaking delicious. I jumped out of bed and ran into the kitchen to start those cherries soaking, so that I could work on the recipe the next day.

Cranberry Cocktail with Boozy Cherries

Ingredients

  • 1 handful dried cherries
  • 1 ounce  Spodee Wine & Shine or sweet vermouth, plus more for cherry-soaking
  • 1 ounce gin
  • 2 ounces unsweetened cranberry juice
  • soda water

Method

  1. In a small container with a lid, pour enough Spodee or sweet vermouth over your dried cherries to just cover them. Stick them in the refrigerator to soak overnight.
  2. Grab yourself a nice tall glass, and spoon a few of the cherries into the bottom. It’s fine if you get some of the soaking liquid in there. Add the gin, the Spodee or sweet vermouth, and the cranberry juice, and stir well. Fill your glass the rest of the way with ice, top with soda water, give it another stir, and serve.
