Judging at Project Alternative

Last week, I got the chance to take part in a super fun fashion show at Alternative Apparel!

Their offices are just north of Atlanta, and they asked me to be on the judging panel with two other judges: David Goodrowe, Associate Dean of the School of Design at SCAD Atlanta and Atlanta PR pro, Kitsy Rose of Kitsy Rose PR. Alternative Apparel employees refashioned pieces from the Alternative line into brand new garments and accessories. It was super duper fun!

There were 30 designers, and we rated the designs on creativity, stylishness, and construction. The models came down the runway super fast…it was kind of crazy getting all of the ratings in for one look before the next one came out. We saw t-shirts turned into purses, hoodies into dresses, and pants into shawls. Everything was super creative, and it was really fun to see how folks mixed things up.

My favorite design ended up being the winner. She used an old skirt from her closet and combined it with an Alternative hoodie to make this awesome dress. I wish I’d been able to find a photo of the back, because that’s what really put this dress over the top for me.

David asked the winning designers what their biggest challenge was with making their garments, and she said that hand sewing everything made it really hard. That’s right: she sewed that entire dress, which has a zipper down the back, by hand.

I’m really honored that they invited me to participate. The folks at Alternative are super nice, and it was great to collaborate with a company that’s so in-line with my beliefs.

Don’t you just love MOO cards? Every time I see them, I’m struck by how pretty they are, and it’s awesome that you can print as many different images in a set as you’d like. So, if you order 100 cards, you can theoretically have 100 different images on the backs for the same price as doing a run of 100 identical cards.

Not too long ago, the MOO folks emailed me about doing a giveaway at Crafting a Green World to launch their new line of green MOO cards. The green cards are 100% recycled and recyclable and even manufactured using wind power. Awesome, right? When they did the giveaway, they also gave me a coupon code to print up my own set of 100 cards, so I could review them. These cards are awesome, and the super kind folks at MOO are now sponsoring a giveaway right here!

Happy Fruit Fabrics Available at Spoonflower

Happy Apple Fabric

After lots of deliberating, I’ve decided to start offering my Happy Fruit mini fabric collection in the Spoonflower marketplace. Yay!

When I was selling my crafts, I wasn’t going to offer these for sale, since the profit margins would have been too low. Now that I’m not focusing on selling, I’ve decided to open these fabrics up for sale over at Spoonflower!

If you order this fabric, I highly recommend choosing the organic cotton sateen or organic cotton interlock knit. Spoonflower’s organic offerings are a bit more pricey, but they’re well worth the extra cash, especially when you consider all of the social and environmental problems with conventional cotton.

Best of Atlanta, 2011!

Aaaaah! I was super duper thrilled this morning to learn that I won Best Indie Crafter in Creative Loafing’s Best of Atlanta 2011 survey this year! Extra special thanks to Christy for sending the link – I had no idea that I’d won!

This is my second year winning Best Indie Crafter (last year, Christy and I tied!), and I am thrilled to be listed among such awesome Atlanta peeps. I’d also be totally remiss if I didn’t also brag on Vegetable Husband, who won Best Way to Skip a Trip to the Farmers Market! Congrats to Margie and to all of the Best of Atlanta winners.

Leaving on a Jetplane

In just a couple of days, I’m going to be hopping on a plane with one of my very best friends and heading to California for a whole week! We’re going to hang in LA with another old friend, then take the Coast Starlight up to San Francisco to see even more people that I love and miss.

The Coast Starlight is a super awesome Amtrak train ride that goes up the California coast. It’s famous for beautiful views of mountains, valleys, desert, coastline, and wildlife. I learned about it while researching my audition piece for How Stuff Works and can’t wait to see it for myself!

It might be quiet around here for the next week or so, but soon I’ll be back, rejuvenated, and ready to talk about crafts, food, and fun!

Grocery Tote Kits are HERE!

You guys! After weeks and weeks of planning, designing, and way more waiting than I wanted to do, everything I needed to make my custom grocery tote kits are finally here, and I spent all day today getting them ready, photographed, and up on Etsy!

The sewing kits contain my brand new Happy Apple or Happy Pear fabric and detailed instructions so that you can make your very own, custom grocery kit.

I am super duper excited to be launching these babies! They’re up in my Etsy shop right now, and I’m going to bring a batch to The Beehive sometime next week! When they’re available at The Beehive, I’ll announce it over at my Facebook page.

Dulce Vegan Grand Opening!

You guys! I have been hinting, and now I can finally come out and say it: the Dulce Vegan Grand Opening is on August 27th!!!

I am super honored to be one of the artists in the curated art show that they’re hosting as part of their opening festivities. Yay!! I have been crafting my fingers off getting some collages and other fun pieces together for the show, and I can’t wait to see my stuff hanging on the walls in my favorite local bakery.

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the pieces I’ve been working on for the show:

Shannon Mulkey of the Indie Craft Experience is curating the show, and my friend Bonnie Heath is going to have photos up at the opening, too! I can’t wait to see what other local artists are taking part. The time is still TBD, but I’ll update as soon as I know for sure!

The Dulce Vegan is right in downtown Kirkwood at 1994 Hosea L. Williams Drive.

My Very First Fabric!

You guys! I’ve got super exciting news!! After wanting to design my own fabric for over a year, I finally took the plunge, and last week my very first piece of custom fabric arrived from Spoonflower.

I was so happy with how this turned out that I already have another custom design on its way to me – Happy Pears! The fabric is organic cotton sateen, and it’s a nice, medium weight cotton. Perfect for my new plan!

These Happy Apples and Pears will be available exclusively as part of my brand new Grocery Tote Craft Kits. The kits are going to include instructions on making your own grocery tote with a front pocket and enough of the apple fabric so that you can use it to make the pocket.

There are still a few details to work out with the kits, but I’m working hard to get them ready for fall shows. When they’re available, though, I’ll definitely post about it here and list them in my Etsy shop!
