This past Saturday, I got to teach an awesome recycled art workshop at Wonderroot. It was a total blast!

The project was based on this burlap chevron painting tutorial that I did for Crafting a Green World, and Atlanta’s new Creative Reuse Center sponsored the workshop and provided all of the supplies. The center doesn’t have a physical location yet, but you can find them on their website, if you’re looking for any reclaimed (and cheap!) art supplies! I am super-excited that we finally are getting a creative reuse center!! Cities like Portland, DC, and Austin have them, and I feel like this goes a long way in strengthening Atlanta’s green crafty cred. Hurrah!

So! Back to the workshop. It was stellar. I kept things super loose, and folks got really creative with their stencils. It was fun to see everyone’s different takes on the project.(. . .)

My favorite part of doing that panel is the Q&A – I feel like I always learn so much and connect with folks on things that we all struggle with in trying to green our processes.

What I wanted to talk about today (and hinted at on Friday) is a really transformational conversation that I had with Willo O’Brien in between sessions. Willo is an amazing designer and full of wisdom about living a creative life, and I was really touched that she took the time to chat with me about something that’s been in my head for a while.(. . .)

Yesterday, I posted about the first day of our Chattanooga adventure at Chatty Crafty. Here’s how the rest of the weekend went down. If you missed day one and want to take a peek, it went up yesterday.

Sunday morning, the time change had us up on the early side, so we had time for a sit down breakfast at Greenlife Grocery before the show! I loaded up on tofu scramble, home fries, and Lightlife soysage. They even had a shaker of nooch on the breakfast bar! Yummmm!

What a great start to the day! It was much warmer and less windy on Sunday. It felt like the day flew by! Before we knew it, it was time to pack up and head back to Sluggo’s for dinner before high-tailing it back to Atlanta.

We got to the restaurant, and it was closed! Boo! It turns out that a lot of places in Chattanooga close or close early on Sunday.

That began our search for something open, vegan-friendly, and delicious. We asked a few folks, consulted the GPS, and ended up at a Japanese bistro on the other side of the river. There weren’t a ton of vegan options, but miso soup, a tofu appetizer, tempura veggies and vegan sushi were just what we needed to power through the two hour drive home. Their tempura appetizer usually has shrimp, but they were happy to make one for us that was all veggies.

After that, we hit the road for Atlanta! I had a really awesome time. It would be fun to head back there when I have a little more time to explore. The downtown is really cool, and I’m in love with the area near Renaissance Park. The park’s facilities building had a green roof and all sorts of eco-friendly features, and there’s a huge hill in the park where folks slide down on pieces of cardboard! Next time, I want to slide down the hill for sure.

Have any of you guys been to Chattanooga? I was really impressed!

Crafty Bastards was as amazing this year as it was last! Five of us tailgated up to DC together: me, Christy Petterson, Shannon Mulkey, Jessica Swift, and Brooke Helfen.

It’s about an 11 hour drive from Atlanta to DC, and we got into town late Friday. A little directional mix up landed us in north east DC, which I would not recommend visiting. Luckily, all 3 cars had someone with GPS, so we found our hotel in north west DC pretty quickly once we realized what had happened. *whew*

Saturday was just mind blowing. I wish I’d gotten a chance to walk around and shop, but there just wasn’t any way that could happen. Luckily, I had awesome neighbors! Shannon was to my left, and the amazing Jennifer Nelson from Home Sweet was to my right.

I took notes on the awesome things that happened but of course now I can’t find them, so here are a few personal highlights from memory:

Meeting Mary of Herban Lifestyle, Rikkianne, one of the heads of Team Eco Etsy, and Danielle Brigida from the National Wildlife Federation

A mother coming to my booth with her little boy asking if he could pick up my lucky cat. I keep a little lucky cat on the table, and he apparently spotted it from several booths away and shouted, “KITTY!” How could I deny him?

People asking me to autograph their copies of Lunch Bags. I was a bit taken aback by this – it was so flattering! I’m blushing just typing it out!

Grabbing drinks and Ethiopian food after the show with the Atlanta crew and some of my favorite Portland crafters. If you’re ever looking for good, vegan food in DC, I highly recommend hitting up one of the Ethiopian places in Adams Morgan! I’ve gone to two different ones now, and they were both fantastic.

It was a super quick trip; we headed back to Atlanta first thing Sunday morning. I’m already looking forward to next year! DC is becoming one of my favorite towns. It would be fun to be able to have a more leisurely visit there someday!

There was an overwhelming outpouring of support from Atlanta’s vegan community! We had one 6′x4′ table, which was filled to the brim before half of the contributors showed up. Luckily, the amazing folks at Criminal Records let us expand our setup to include the entire back counter! They were also kind enough to let us move the bake sale indoors when the weather report called for low 30′s and rain. Thank you guys!!!

You can also peruse a ton of ICE photos on the Indie Craft Experience Flickr pool!

Did you take photos at the event? I’d love to see! I didn’t get to walk around too much, so it’s been really fun to go through all of these pics online.

I got to do a little bit of shopping, including picking up part of Dave’s Christmas gift (sorry, this one’s a secret until the 25th!), an owl coin purse from So She Sews, and a cupcake from the Dulce Vegan.

Thanks so much to all of the lovely folks who stopped by! It was nice to put faces with names and see some old friends, too!

I hit up lots of fun sessions on topics from taking better photos of my work led by Dandelion Blu to understanding trademark and copyright. Christy spoke on a panel about organizing a craft show and did a demo on screen printing. Both of those were great! I heard a lot of buzz about the screen printing one afterward. The Crafting a Green Craft panel that I spoke on was so much fun! I feel like I picked up as much information on greening your craft as I had to contribute, which was absolutely perfect!

I’m going to be out of commission for a short while, so today is all about tying up loose ends. Since I don’t have time to do a great wrap up of the weekend, I thought I’d point you to some folks who have it covered!
The parade this year really knocked my socks off. Sometimes I get down on Atlanta, between our transit woes and water shortages and urban sprawl. This parade really embodies the things that make this city great. Those things are: neighborhoods like mine and like Inman Park and the people who live here.

Check out all these great pictures from Saturday:
