It’s still crazy hectic over here, but I wanted to take a minute to talk about Blog Action Day! This is an annual event where folks across the Internet pull together to raise awareness about a particular issue. This year’s topic is water, and I think the organizers couldn’t have picked something more timely.

I have to admit that I have a little bit of a crafty crush on Tracy Perkins of Strawberry Hedgehog. I’ve even written about her here before. She makes absolutely amazing vegan bath and beauty products, and she’s a vegan activist to boot! This summer, she pulled together a series of vegan bake sales, raising thousands of dollars for a local no kill shelter near her hometown in Arizona.

But enough gushing from me. Let’s hear from Tracy!

Some of my pals over at Sustainablog are going to be at eco bed & breakfast The Milkweed Mercantile throwing a blogathon to raise money for Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage.

The blogathon is raising funds for residential learning opportunities at Dancing Rabbit in organic gardening, natural green building, and wind and solar renewable energy design and installation. They’d love if you’d consider making a pledge to support this sustainable community’s efforts. It’s sort of like sponsoring someone who’s running a race, but instead of pledging an amount per mile, you’re pledging per post! To pledge, just leave a comment on the blogathon post over at Sustainablog

I think she’s so right. Focusing on what we’re against [...]]]> Julia “Butterfly” Hill lived in a tree named Luna for over 700 days. She saved that tree and acres of surrounding forest from being clear-cut. She’s an amazing woman. I really dug this lecture from her that No Impact Man posted last week:

I think she’s so right. Focusing on what we’re against isolates us. A lot of times, it puts off the very folks who’s minds we’re looking to change. Whether we’re talking about veganism, climate change, or any other cause that folks get passionate about, framing the debate in an us vs. them way just doesn’t get things done, you know? I thought this video was a nice reminder that the goal isn’t to just point out what’s wrong but to work together towards making things more right.

The Time for Lunch picnic was fantastical! We hung out with our friends Bonnie, Robert, Shannon and Oz, ate a delicious picnic lunch, and heard some awesome speakers. Bonnie and Oz made the amazing sign pictured above there, and it won second prize! Hurrah!

I wanted to share this amazing post with you guys from Vegan Outreach. Matt Ball talks about the hows and whys of veganism beyond what you do and don’t eat, and I feel like he really gets at the heart of the matter:

If we believe that being vegan is important, being the most effective advocate for the animals must be seen as even more important! The impact of our individual veganism – several hundred animals over the course of a lifetime – pales in comparison to what we have the potential to accomplish with our example. For every person inspired to change their habits, the impact we have on the world multiplies!

He really stresses that it’s about effective change and really focuses on the big picture. I’m basically in love with this bit from the last part of the article:

Situations are subtle and opportunities unique, thus there can be no set answers. But if our decisions are guided by a desire to accomplish the most good, we each have enormous potential to create change.

I fully agree with this post…it’s not about a list of ingredients but living by example and hoping folks will see that it’s possible to change their habits without giving up happiness.

Last night, a group of us hit up Charis Books to see Scott Kellogg, co-author of Toolbox for Sustainable City Living. I was the girl scribbling furiously in my notebook.

He talked all about making sustainable living accessible to everyone. The Rhizome Collective and the book he wrote with Stacy Pettigrew focus on DIY solutions to food, water, and energy security problems. You can check out my notes on the talk over at my post on Ecolocalizer!
