Sooooo….I don’t have all of the details yet (like the date), but! I’m taking part in a group show later on this month, and without naming any names I will tell you that the show is at a certain bakery here in Atlanta that I’m obsessed with.

Obviously, lots and lots of cupcake-themed art is in order!

I’m really honored that I got invited to take part in this show, and I want to do a few different sorts of pieces for it (fingers crossed!). Some of it is already in progress, but to get super pumped about cupcake art, I thought the best thing to do was to, you know, look at beautiful pictures of cupcakes! Just finding images for this post have got me pretty excited to get crafty!

Over at the Young Blood Gallery blog, Maggie posted about something that really breaks my heart. Late last week, the Georgia House of Representatives voted to eliminate the Georgia Funds for the Arts and Georgia Council for the Arts. That means that art groups in our state can no longer receive grants or state support. It’s a huge hit for the art community and for art education.

Maggie talked about some things that folks can do to let our representatives know how we feel about this decision:(. . .)

Oh my goodness, these beautiful butterflies by artist Paul Villinski are rocking my socks!

In his artist statement, Villinski says:

Who leaves these crushed beer cans – forlorn evidence scattered in the streets of the city? I take these “dead soldiers” – every one of them once raised to someone’s lips – and breathe new life into them, changing them into images that suggest the possibility of change itself. A kind of conceptual unity develops between materials, process and imagery: my practice in the studio mimics the act of transformation that butterflies symbolize everywhere, in all cultures.

Our grandchildren will laugh in disbelief at the vast resources we squander, manufacturing a plastic bottle for a pint of water, or mining aluminum to surround 12 ounces of beer with metal. One generation’s trash will be another’s treasure. These littered beer cans are humble, but worthy materials, and it’s gratifying to take this “trash” and turn it into something of beauty and meaning.

What a beautiful way to keep aluminum out of the bin! These lovely pieces really speak for themselves, so rather than go on about them, here are some more photos:

In the wow department, check out this life sized Hummer made out of styrofoam! Artist Andy Junge created the 400 pound piece completely out of styrofoam he scavenged at a San Francisco dump. Junge says, “My aim is to turn the lowest form of human productivity, trash, into the highest, art – a kind of modern alchemy.” What a fantastical statement!

The hummer is on display until July 26th at the Art Center Sarasota.
