Indie Craft Experience and My Final Show Schedule, Maybe Ever!

Creative Reuse Workshop Wrap-Up

This past Saturday, I got to teach an awesome recycled art workshop at Wonderroot. It was a total blast!

The project was based on this burlap chevron painting tutorial that I did for Crafting a Green World, and Atlanta’s new Creative Reuse Center sponsored the workshop and provided all of the supplies. The center doesn’t have a physical location yet, but you can find them on their website, if you’re looking for any reclaimed (and cheap!) art supplies! I am super-excited that we finally are getting a creative reuse center!! Cities like Portland, DC, and Austin have them, and I feel like this goes a long way in strengthening Atlanta’s green crafty cred. Hurrah!

So! Back to the workshop. It was stellar. I kept things super loose, and folks got really creative with their stencils. It was fun to see everyone’s different takes on the project.(. . .)

Class: Mod Painting at Wonderroot

I’m super excited to be teaching a class at Wonderroot on making your very own mod art on fabric! The project is based on the triptych of paintings that I made Dave for our anniversary, and I can’t wait to teach folks how to make their very own upcycled art!

Aaaaah! I was super duper thrilled this morning to learn that I won Best Indie Crafter in Creative Loafing’s Best of Atlanta 2011 survey this year! Extra special thanks to Christy for sending the link – I had no idea that I’d won!

This is my second year winning Best Indie Crafter (last year, Christy and I tied!), and I am thrilled to be listed among such awesome Atlanta peeps. I’d also be totally remiss if I didn’t also brag on Vegetable Husband, who won Best Way to Skip a Trip to the Farmers Market! Congrats to Margie and to all of the Best of Atlanta winners.

Dulce Vegan Grand Opening!

You guys! I have been hinting, and now I can finally come out and say it: the Dulce Vegan Grand Opening is on August 27th!!!

I am super honored to be one of the artists in the curated art show that they’re hosting as part of their opening festivities. Yay!! I have been crafting my fingers off getting some collages and other fun pieces together for the show, and I can’t wait to see my stuff hanging on the walls in my favorite local bakery.

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the pieces I’ve been working on for the show:

Shannon Mulkey of the Indie Craft Experience is curating the show, and my friend Bonnie Heath is going to have photos up at the opening, too! I can’t wait to see what other local artists are taking part. The time is still TBD, but I’ll update as soon as I know for sure!

The Dulce Vegan is right in downtown Kirkwood at 1994 Hosea L. Williams Drive.

Faux Meat Discovery: Trumpet Mushroom Stems

Holy moly, you guys! How have I lived in Atlanta for 9 years without making it up to Harmony Vegetarian for vegan Chinese food?

OK, I will tell you how: I have always lived within the delivery radius of either Green Sprout or Chinese Buddha, which both offer delicious vegan Chinese that I can eat in my pajamas. When my friend Adrienne suggested a field trip up to Harmony recently, I decided it was time to finally try this fabled place. I am so glad that we did!

Adrienne highly recommended the vegetarian lamb with string beans, so that’s what I ordered. Another great decision! As I was devouring this dish, she asked if I’d tried one of the mushrooms yet.

Mushrooms?

I stared at my plate of what was clearly seitan, string beans, and carrots. Then, she explained that the faux meat I was eating was NOT seitan! It was trumpet mushroom stems!

One of the things that makes me feel guilty about typical faux meats is that they’re usually very processed. Even seitan, which I sort of think of as the healthiest vegan meat, takes a lot of preparation. These mushroom stems were just marinated and sauteed. That’s it!

If you’ve never seen a trumpet mushroom before, they’re mostly stem. Here’s a photo of a fresh one, to give you an idea of what’s going on here:

Here’s my best guess about how they prepared these babies:

Chop the stems of a bunch of trumpet mushrooms into strips.
Whip up a marinade with soy sauce, ginger, chili garlic sauce, sesame oil, and rice wine vinegar
Marinate for at least an hour, then cook it up with string beans, onion, carrots, and lots of garlic.

Obviously, as soon as I can track down some trumpet mushrooms, I’ll put this theory to the test! Have any of you guys had success with using mushrooms to replace meat? I know Jes has done some delicious things with chicken of the woods mushrooms…anyone else?

IF: The Indie Craft Experience! Again!

I am super excited about the Indie Craft Experience show that’s coming up this weekend, and I can’t stop looking through their beautiful vendor gallery and poring over the talented artists who are going to be there.

Last week, I rounded up a few of the awesome ICE vendors who will be at the show, and I thought it would be fun to share some more amazing vendors with you guys, since the show is tomorrow and Sunday!

Touring the Indie Craft Experience

The Indie Craft Experience summer show is this very weekend, and I’m so excited!! ICE is by far my favorite Atlanta show, and Christy and Shannon do an amazing job combining talented crafters, stellar music, and great food to create a really magical shopping experience.

They recently released a video tour from the winter ICE, and I think it’s a great peek at what an ICE show is all about. Fun fact! The handsome fella in the blue shirt that walks past the doorway around 9 seconds into the video is my husband, Dave. Check it:

The summer Indie Craft Experience is this very weekend, June 11-12 at Ambient+ Studio here in Atlanta. The show runs 11am-6pm both days. I hope to see you locals out there!

IF: Summer Indie Craft Experience

The Summer Indie Craft Experience (ICE) is only a week away, and I’m already getting excited about checking out my fellow vendors’ booths. I’ve been sewing like crazy to restock Cupcaprons, Lunch Kits, Snack Sleeves and Cup Gloves for the show, and all of that marathon crafting can be a little bit exhausting. When I start to get a little weary it really helps me to peruse other folks’ crafts to give me an energy boost to keep on sewing.

There are some really amazing crafters participating in the summer ICE, and what’s more inspirational than checking out beautiful handmade goodies, right? For your daydreaming and shopping pleasure:
