Happy New Year! What’s Your Crafty Resolution?

Well hello there, 2012! So nice to meet you!

I’ve always had a tough time with new year’s resolutions, but last year I made a crafty one, and it was so much fun that I decided to do the same thing this year. I talked a bit more in-depth about my new year’s resolution over at Green Upgrader, but I thought I’d share mine here, too, and I hope that you’ll share yours!

Exciting Changes! #lml

I haven’t done a wrap-up yet from this year’s Summit of Awesome, but suffice to say that it was….AWESOME! I learned a ton, met some amazing crafters, and my green crafts panel with Shanon was fabulous! My favorite part of doing that panel is the Q&A – I feel like I always learn so much and connect with folks on things that we all struggle with in trying to green our processes.

What I wanted to talk about today (and hinted at on Friday) is a really transformational conversation that I had with Willo O’Brien in between sessions. Willo is an amazing designer and full of wisdom about living a creative life, and I was really touched that she took the time to chat with me about something that’s been in my head for a while.(. . .)

Crafters at the Make Something Awesome table at last year's Summit

I mentioned before that I’m going to be talking green crafts at The Summit of Awesome, and since the Summit is coming up soon things are starting to fall into place. Shannon and I got a lot of planning done for our talk, and the fantastical folks at Hello Craft have offered a $25 discount on a 3-day pass for Glue and Glitter readers!

The Summit of Awesome is a three day crafty event featuring panels, discussions, and activities to help you enrich your crafty life. Every year, I come away feeling energized and way more informed than when I arrived, and I hope that some of you guys are coming to this year’s summit on October 20-22 in Baltimore!

Eat! Drink! Make!

Hopefully it hasn’t been obvious to you guys, but I’ve been sort of playing around with what this blog is all about. Other than sharing news about upcoming shows and events, I wasn’t sure if I should focus on crafting, cooking, crafty business or something else entirely, and after months of deliberating, I think I’ve finally settled on a theme:

Eat! Drink! Make!

Oddly enough, inspiration struck in the middle of writing a tutorial for Green Upgrader. I was whipping up a craft market display using vintage suitcases and decided to make little signs to go on top of each of my suitcases to sort of delineate what my different lines are about. One suitcase says, “MAKE!” on top (for Lunch Bags! the book and my Cup Glove Kits) and the other has a sign that says, “EAT! DRINK!” (for my Lunch Kits, Snack Sleeves, and Cup Gloves).

As I was assembling the signs, I suddenly had one of those “aha” moments.

For whatever reason, it hadn’t clicked for me that crafting and cooking are such similar activities. Whether you’re putting a meal together or sitting at the sewing machine, you’re taking components and turning them into exactly what you want. What was feeling sort of stretched thin suddenly felt completely right, and I’m super excited about having a clear direction for this site! Don’t you just love it when things fall into place?

Announcing: The Glue and Glitter Community!

The folks at Lunch.com approached me about launching a community site, and I’m so glad that they did! I’m still getting things finalized over there, but I wanted to invite you guys to jump right in!

Think of it as an eco-friendly water cooler. You can talk about and review things from vegan cookbooks to Cupcaprons and share quick tips on green crafting and vegan eats. There’s a bit of a conversation happening on the community now, and I’d love to see it grow! When you have a minute, I encourage you to click around and see what you think.

I’ve added some of my favorite craft supplies and vegan cookbooks, and I’d love to hear what you think of those! You’re also welcome to recommend things of your own or share quickie tips for crafting and cooking. I can’t wait to see what you guys recommend, review, and suggest!

The Well Stocked Craft Room

A well stocked craft room makes it so much easier to dive into projects at a moment’s notice!

Just like stocking your kitchen with spices, condiments, and tools, a good crafty stash has certain essential components no matter what you’re making. Whether you’ve got a whole room dedicated to crafting or just a small amount of space, these are some building blocks for any crafty space.

Thoughts From the Summit: The Crafty Community

I’m back from Portland, and I’ve got to tell you I’m pretty much reeling with inspiration and ideas after the amazing Summit of Awesome! My camera cable is MIA, so I can’t share any of my pictures yet, but I nabbed this one of the green crafting panel I was on from my trusty traveling companion, Christy.

The week was a little bit of a sensory overload, and I’m still processing everything I learned. I hit up a couple of great sessions with Caitlin Phillips about craft shows and learned a ton. In fact, I’ve been working this week on a brand new display that I’m hoping to roll out at least partially at the LRBN Pop Up Show next week!

Today, I thought I’d try to put words to some of the things I got out of the panel on Crafting Community.

Portland’s Show of Awesome is Going to be….Awesome!

Are you not able to make it to the Summit of Awesome this year but still looking to get in on the crafty action? The organizers have you covered with the Show of Awesome on Saturday, June 19th!

The show is at the Doug Fir Lounge all ages, free, and open to the public.

Not only will there be 40 amazing crafters from all over the country, Hello Craft is setting up a Make Something Awesome table, so you can get your craft on, too, with make and take projects from embroidery to hand pressed buttons!
