I basically grew up in the kitchen. Some of my best memories are of watching my grandmother cook or standing on a chair by the stove to stir the pot while my pops and I made dinner. When I went vegetarian as a teen and then vegan in my 20s, it felt like I needed that kind of guidance once again. Since there weren’t any family members with meat-free cooking knowledge, I had to find some additional cooking heroes.

Want to read more about the folks who helped me along in my cooking adventures? You can check out the whole post over at Eat Drink Better.

I’d love to hear about your cooking heroes! So many of you guys clearly have a connection with the kitchen…who taught you how to cook and how to love it?

Dave and I headed to Orlando to see my in-laws including our super-sweet nephews! On Sunday night, we all went to the Disney Christmas Party. I’ve got to say, I was a little wary of taking a three- and a five-year-old to the Magic Kingdom, but now I see why parents get into this. Those boys were pumped, and it was pretty darn cute!

We also hit up Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure while we were in town. I was happy to see that all three parks now offer recycling bins for plastic bottles and for cans. It would have been nice if there had been recycle bins next to every trash bin, though.

There were only recycling bins in select places in each park. I was on the lookout for bins and had to ask an employee to point me to one. For someone not thinking about it, that bottle or can would probably go right into a trash bin. How many more bottles and cans would Disney and Universal divert from the landfill if the bins were not just available but prominent?

Happy New Year, lovely people!

The kitchen is mostly tidied from our party, this cup of coffee with almond milk is doing wonders for my little hangover, and we’re watching Cinematic Titanic. We rocked some band after midnight and had an all around wonderful New Year’s eve!

I never did get around to writing about my visit to Fort Lauderdale and mom’s Christmas party! The food at that party was a test run for our NYE spread. I sort of dug watching folks eat the food and be amazed that it was vegan. Success!

This was the buffet at mom’s Christmas party! I did all the cooking, so it was a totally vegan menu. Most of these are old faves, but one is an idea I completely stole from my friend Ally: tiny twice-baked potatoes! You can see them on the left there – they got eaten pretty quickly, so more than half the tray is gone! Here’s the recipe:

This weekend, we headed up to North Carolina to visit Liz and our baby nephews! The plan was to work at their Halloween store for a few hours, but we somehow ended up at an antiques mall instead! It is really hard to explain to a two-year-old that he can’t bang on the very, very old piano. My solution was to wheel the stroller away from the piano as fast as I safely could.

Liz and Robbie's house

Liz lives in a gorgeous house just outside of town. Their property is surrounded by woods. They frequently have deer hanging out around the woodsy part of their land. On Saturday, Donnie was telling me that he thought the deer had probably eaten all of the persimmons. Wait, what?? Persimmons?? Growing?? Here? Obviously, we had to go see if there were any left. I love a persimmon. Dave, my nephew and I headed out to the persimmon tree to see what we could see. It looks like the deer did get most of the low-hanging ones, but we were able to get a few by using a combination of a golf club and me holding my baby nephew up as high as I could. He was really into picking persimmons, though not so much into eating them. We ended up with only two that were ripe enough. Here I am with my proud haul:(. . .)
