Heather of Hey Designs makes lovely jewelry from reclaimed materials. She says:

I take apart jewelery that myself or somebody else didn’t want anymore and I will find a new use for it, that’s how I acquired some of my beads, findings etc. For my summer collection I also used a lot of shells, all that were found by me at the beach. Right now I am working on some pieces that are vintage and were handed down to me like old skeleton keys and buttons. I also go to antique shops and buy things like chains and old necklaces (which I than take apart).

She was also kind enough to answer my 5 questions!

1. Tell me about how you got started crafting.
I can remember making things when I was old enough to hold crayons, scissors or what ever else I could get my hands on. My mom is an artist along with my grandma so I was always surrounded by crafts, and my creative ideas were all ways flowing whether it was making new clothes for my dolls or friendship bracelets for my friends.

2. What draws you to eco-friendly materials?
I am very concerned about the welfare of animals in this world. I am disgusted by how much waste is created everyday by excessive packaging and Styrofoam containers, so I always recycle and try to be cautious of what I throw away. I put my money into companies who use recycled materials, plant trees and don’t conduct animal testing.

3. What inspires you?
I am inspired by nature and animals. Nature is always changing and is so beautiful, and I think we can learn a lot from nature if we just take the time to look and observe. I am inspired by animals because like nature they are complex and beautiful.

4. Who are your crafty heroes?
My crafty heroes would be my great-grandfather and my grandma. My great-grandfather was a great jeweler and I treasure the jewelry that I have from him. My grandma was always sewing or baking, making things for all her grand kids. Everything that they created was made with love and excellent craftsmanship.

5. Where can folks find your work?
My work is on my Etsy shop and I have a few Hemp Dog and Cat Collars at Enza’s Organic Salon in Salisbury, MD. You can also find out more about heydesigns by checking out my blog.

Arizona crafter Brooke Perkins creates a lovely jewelery line out of recycled glass beads.

Brooke has been making jewelry since she was a kid, and it definitely shows. She does all of the wire work by hand, and you can tell by how uniform the two earrings look that she’s got serious skills.

I was lucky enough to receive a pair of Brooke’s beautiful earrings in the mail last week to try out. The pair she sent is a combination of recycled glass and sterling silver. I just love the wire work that supports the delicate seafoam-green beads.

The earrings are a little bit heavier than I’m used to but by no means uncomfortable. The wire and beads dangle from French hooks with a bit of chain, giving them a nice swing. They hit me right above the jaw, which is just perfect.

While the metal that she uses is mostly new, the glass beads are fully recycled. In its previous life, all of the glass in her recycled line comes from soda bottles. A lot of recycled glass actually ends up getting downcycled into lesser material, so you can feel good about rescuing these lovely pieces of glass from that fate!

You can check out Brooke’s recycled glass line over in the Jeweled Triton Etsy shop. She’s got pieces made with conventionally-mined sterling silver and gold as well as some pieces made with recycled copper!

Hat tip to my pal Taylen for sending this link! Shaun and Tawny Reynolds’ company Sundrop Jewelry uses passive solar power to create gorgeous recycled glass jewelry! They’re super-transparant about their materials and sourcing over on their blog, which makes me love them even more!

On the blog, they talk about everything from where they get their silver findings to the impact of shipping and what they’re doing to improve all of it. It’s refreshing to see a company so open about its processes. I love how on the level they are about everything – they admit areas that could use improvement right alongside great news about how they’re lightening their business’ footprint.

Of course, the part I’m most enamored with is how they form those lovely drops. Check out this totally rad video of the process:

What a simple setup, and the results are just beautiful! They stock earrings, belly buttons rings, necklaces, and wine charms in their online store as well as in bunches of shops around North America.
