What’s more local than food you grew in your very own back yard, right? This Saturday, Atlanta folks can pick up their very own fruit trees at the annual Fruit Tree Sale!

Last year, they sold out in 30 minutes, so you probably want to try to get there early. The sale runs from 9am to 12pm this very Saturday, the 22nd at the Atlanta Community Food Bank. They offered over 1000 trees in their online presale (I wish I’d known!), and those are all sold out already. They’ll also have fruit tree experts available to chat with you about your plant and how to help it thrive.

I’m happy to hear that so many Atlantas are getting into growing their own food! Are you planning to hit up the fruit tree sale?
CC photo by Flickr user townandcountrygardens" width="199" height="300" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1863" />Last week’s Vegetable Husband delivery included some local garlic and a big bag of sorrel. I’d never cooked with sorrel before, but my mom did a little googling while we were gabbing and mentioned sorrel pesto. Sorrel! Pesto! This was so on. I was able to make this with just ingredients from my pantry, and it was fresh and delicious tossed with some whole wheat pasta.

Sorrel has sort of a tangy, lemony flavor. Every recipe mom saw advised that you remove the center ribs from the leaves, so I’m guessing that’s a standard part of prepping the stuff. The leaves have a pretty strong flavor, and I bet those ribs are even more tangy!

Sorrel Pesto

1 1/2c sorrel, ribs removed

1/2c almonds (you could use any nuts or seeds you like in place of the almonds)

3 cloves of garlic

1/2c olive oil

1/4c nutritional yeast

salt and pepper, to taste

Toss everything into the blender except for the nutritional yeast, salt, and pepper. Blend, scraping down the sides of your blender as needed, until the mixture turns semi-smooth. A few chunks of nuts or sorrel here and there are totally fine.

Pour the mixture into a large bowl and stir in the nutritional yeast, salt, and pepper. Toss with freshly cooked pasta!

This would also be a great dip for bread or as a sandwich spread. So many possibilities! I added some steamed broccoli to the pasta, because broccoli also came with our Vegetable Husband this week!

Both are sustainable-living themed and look like they’re going to be a lot of fun!

Sustainable Living Roadshow – Sept 20-21
The Sustainable Living Roadshow is touring the country in biofuelled vehicles spreading the word about green living. They’re hitting Emory University on the 20th and 21st! I’m a little worried that I won’t be able to make this one, since the 20th is the Strut AND the Munny show at MINT Gallery. If I can move at all on Sunday, though, I want to go check it out!

Farmers Market Bike Rally – September 27
September is Local Food Month, and three Atlanta markets are teaming up for a bike rally to showcase the goodness of local food! The rally starts and ends at the Green Market in Piedmont Park and hits two other markets along the way. There’s even music and a picnic lunch afterward!
