I’m sewing like crazy to get ready for the holidays, and sometimes a little inspiration is in order to keep things moving along.

I know, it’s still summer, but last fall I made myself a promise, and I’m determined to keep it! Every fall/holiday season, I feel like I’m drowning as I keep up with shops and festivals where I’m selling my stuff, and every year I tell myself that next year, I’m going to start early. Seriously, this has been happening for years, and this time, I mean it.

So! I’ve got a goal amount of product that I want to have finished before the fall festivals and holiday shopping rush get here, and I’m working towards that every week. I started a few weeks ago, and I have to admit that sometimes it’s hard to sit down to sew something now that I probably won’t need until the weather cools off. My brain nags me with other things it wants to do, like sit on the porch with a beer or read my book or watch reruns of Dr. Who.

Do you ever have a hard time getting into the sewing groove? I thought a little bit of sewing inspiration might help kick my butt into gear, and in case you’re having a similar problem, I wanted to share it with you guys!

The whip stitch is one of my favorite hand sewing stitches. It’s so useful and easy to do! In the video below, she’s using it to finish a hem, but you can also use a narrower whip stitch to close a busted seam or even reinforce a pocket that’s started to pull, like on the hoodie in the photo above. That comes in handy if you’re hard on clothing and housewares like I am.

To mend a busted seam or pocket, you just start on the wrong side of the fabric just above the problem area, use the stitch to pull the split pieces together, sew up the tear plus a few stitches past the end of the tear, and tie a knot. That’s it!

You can go with a coordinating thread color to make your mending almost invisible or choose a contrasting thread if you want to show off your crafty fix! Of course, I almost always opt for contrasting. I think those little pops of color make the mended piece even cooler than the original!

You guys may have noticed the brand new link at the top of the site to a Kitchen and Sewing Essentials page. I get a lot of questions from folks about stocking the kitchen and the sewing room and thought it might be cool to have a place to share supplies that I either can’t live without or covet for my own cooking and sewing adventures!

There are only a few products up now, but if there are things you’d like to see, hit me up through the contact page! I’d be happy to add recommendations if there are other things you’re looking for.

Don’t worry…I’m still hard at work sewing up goodies for your handmade kitchen, but I wanted to be able to help folks find items like a rice cooker and steamer that I can’t make myself, too!

Hi there, wonderful people! Do you like to sew? Are you looking to try out a new project for the new year?

I’m working on developing a brand new sewing kit and am looking for a few beginner-level seamstresses to help test out the instructions for me. If you’re interested, send me an email through the contact form here on the site, and I’ll get you the pdf template and instructions and tell you what other supplies you’ll need to test the project out!

If you agree to test, I just need you to pinky swear to keep the project under wraps until I release the kits – I want it to be a surprise!

It took about three or four [...]]]> I saw this ladder stitch tutorial on CRAFT a while back, and it was so helpful that I thought I’d post it here, too! Leslie Bonnell does a really clear, easy to follow tutorial on this awesome invisible stitch for closing things like pillows and softies:

It took about three or four viewings to fully get what was going on here, but now I’ve totally got the hang of this handy stitch! I love the terms she uses to explain things, like telling you to start the next stitch “across the street” from the previous one. I want to hunt around for more sewing tutorials from her!

I finished up three new Lunch Kits which are now up in the shop! Woo! The orange Banner Day one is my favorite of the bunch. It’s a bit slouchier than [...]]]> So yesterday I took off of work to collect myself and do some sewing and writing and cooking. It was magical.

I finished up three new Lunch Kits which are now up in the shop! Woo! The orange Banner Day one is my favorite of the bunch. It’s a bit slouchier than the usual ones, because the vintage linens it’s made from are soft like butter.

The plan was to make more Lunch Kits, but I decided to leave that for the weekend and get into the kitchen instead. I’ve been trying to learn the ins and outs of crock pot life, and it’s been really fun to dump things in there and see what happens. It’s not as rigid as I thought it would be! Yesterday, I made a bean stew. Here’s how it sort of evolved:(. . .)

I think probably “Simplicity” is not an apt name for this machine. More like “Difficulty” or “Frustration” or “Why does the purple thread [...]]]>

So last night, my galpals Jessie and Michelle came over, and we pulled out my serger! I’m totally intimidated by this thing, even after last night.

I think probably “Simplicity” is not an apt name for this machine. More like “Difficulty” or “Frustration” or “Why does the purple thread keep breaking?” It took us two hours, five tries, a flashlight, a pair of tweezers, and copious amounts of wine and cursing to get it all threaded and set the tension properly. But! Now it’s done! And, according to Jessie and the manual, I don’t have to rethread it for a long time. There is a fancy tying off method where you can change the thread without unthreading the machine. More on that when I have some cones of my own to put on there. The ones in the picture are loaners.

So today, I took off of work to get a bunch of sewing done! A really exciting email showed up in my inbox yesterday afternoon, and now I feel like I should probably make a lot of Lunch Kits by next week. A little vague, I know, but I’ve learned my lesson about jinxing myself! I promise more details when I’m sure there are details to share!

Today is sort of windy and gray, so it’s nice to hole up in the craft room with bad TV and sew like mad! It’s veggie roast weather. Or maybe some sort of crock pot stew?

It turns out [...]]]> It was a great weekend! In between sewing and writing, I squeezed in a bunch of good cooking. There was also a shopping trip to hunt for new fabric wherein I totally scored! I’ll get some pictures of the awesome fabric haul once everything comes out of the laundry.

It turns out I have a couple of shows coming up at the start of February! Hurrah!

Thursday, February 5th is the first KRAFTWORK Handmade Market of 2009 at the Young Blood Gallery and Boutique from 7-10pm. Just a few days later on February 7th, I’ll be setting up at the Academy Theater’s RAD Art Show from 5-10pm. Come out and say hey!

These new Kits will go up in the shop over the next few days, so keep an eye out! I’m also planning to put together some brand new goodies for the February shows!
