Exciting Changes! #lml

I haven’t done a wrap-up yet from this year’s Summit of Awesome, but suffice to say that it was….AWESOME! I learned a ton, met some amazing crafters, and my green crafts panel with Shanon was fabulous! My favorite part of doing that panel is the Q&A – I feel like I always learn so much and connect with folks on things that we all struggle with in trying to green our processes.

What I wanted to talk about today (and hinted at on Friday) is a really transformational conversation that I had with Willo O’Brien in between sessions. Willo is an amazing designer and full of wisdom about living a creative life, and I was really touched that she took the time to chat with me about something that’s been in my head for a while.(. . .)

Self Care and My Daily Lunch Break #lml

I have a an announcement coming up on Monday which goes into a little bit more detail about this, but one of the things I learned at the Summit of Awesome this year was about self care. It’s something I haven’t thought a whole lot about, but I feel like that term puts words to a concept that’s been brewing for me for a while. Whether you’re making your living as an artist, crafter, writer, or at a more typical day job, I think it’s so important to take time to nurture yourself and look at what you really want and what makes you happy.

I mentioned before that I’m going to be talking green crafts at The Summit of Awesome, and since the Summit is coming up soon things are starting to fall into place. Shannon and I got a lot of planning done for our talk, and the fantastical folks at Hello Craft have offered a $25 discount on a 3-day pass for Glue and Glitter readers!

The Summit of Awesome is a three day crafty event featuring panels, discussions, and activities to help you enrich your crafty life. Every year, I come away feeling energized and way more informed than when I arrived, and I hope that some of you guys are coming to this year’s summit on October 20-22 in Baltimore!

Talking Green Crafts at the Summit of Awesome!

You guys! I am thrilled to announce that one of my very favorite local green crafters, Shannon Mulkey, and I are going to be doing a green crafting panel at this year’s Summit of Awesome in Baltimore, MD!

I couldn’t be more honored to be participating in this event with so many crafty superstars. Check out the full lineup of speakers over at the Hello Craft website, and prepare to gasp! This will be my third year on the green crafting panel at the Summit, so I have a good bit of information from previous years. But! I don’t want this thing to just be a rehashing of old information, so I thought I’d ask you guys:

What green crafty issues do you struggle with? What do you wish you knew more about?

I’m super-excited to be working with Shannon. She’s one of the organizers of the Indie Craft Experience, my very favorite local craft market, and she brings tons of eco-friendly knowledge to the table. We’re already scheming what we want to talk about, and we’re both looking forward to the panel!

Shannon’s partner in crime, Christy Petterson, is going to be on a panel or two (and I think she’s doing a demonstration, too!). Christy is the other half of the Indie Craft Experience, and another one of my very favorite local crafters!

Are any of you guys heading to the Summit of Awesome this year? I hope you can make it to the panel, and that you’ll come say hello!

5 Questions with Kelly Rand

Kelly Rand is editor of Crafting a Green World and program director at Hello Craft. She’s an influencer who’s shaping the crafty movement and an all around awesome woman. Her talk at last year’s Summit of Awesome on “Owning Your Awesomeness” was one of my favorite sessions.

Like Julie Finn, Kelly and I have been working together for years, and I can’t believe that I’m just now featuring her here!

1. Tell me about how you got started crafting.
I have basically been crafty all of my life. I loved painting, drawing and even convinced my parents to get me a small child’s play pottery wheel. I loved creating and eventually went to art school. Afterwards my mother taught me how to knit and it’s been down hill ever since.

2. What draws you to eco-friendly materials?
As with handmade in general, I love knowing where my materials are made and how. It adds another layer to the story of your items, when you can say that your special knits are made with wool from a CSA or was dyed using solar power. There are great stories there that deserve to be told.

3. What inspires you?
Too many things! I have a dark and twisted sense of humor and recently have come across Who Killed Bambi. It really strikes a chord!

4. Who are your crafty heroes?
I don’t think I have any one in particular – but I am constantly in awe of those that have the courage and entrepreneurial drive to strike out on their own and pursue their craft.

5. Where can folks find your work?
I mostly sell at local fairs, but you can keep up with me and my writing at Hit me up through my site’s contact page!

Thoughts From the Summit: The Crafty Community

I’m back from Portland, and I’ve got to tell you I’m pretty much reeling with inspiration and ideas after the amazing Summit of Awesome! My camera cable is MIA, so I can’t share any of my pictures yet, but I nabbed this one of the green crafting panel I was on from my trusty traveling companion, Christy.

The week was a little bit of a sensory overload, and I’m still processing everything I learned. I hit up a couple of great sessions with Caitlin Phillips about craft shows and learned a ton. In fact, I’ve been working this week on a brand new display that I’m hoping to roll out at least partially at the LRBN Pop Up Show next week!

Today, I thought I’d try to put words to some of the things I got out of the panel on Crafting Community.

Portland Bound

You guys, I am excited to say that in just a few hours, I’ll be heading to the airport and then to Portland, Oregon for the Summit of Awesome!

The Summit is a three day event of crafty panels, demonstrations, and activities where crafters can learn and network. The organizers at Hello Craft are some seriously amazing women, and I’m honored that they’re having me back to speak on a panel and do a Cup Glove demo!

Last week, I put together lots of info for the green crafting panel and assembled half-completed Cup Gloves for the demo. I realized that we won’t have access to any sewing machines, and we’ll have only limited numbers of irons and scissors, so for the sake of time I got the preliminary parts done. Here is the half-completed Cup Glove army:

Portland’s Show of Awesome is Going to be….Awesome!

Are you not able to make it to the Summit of Awesome this year but still looking to get in on the crafty action? The organizers have you covered with the Show of Awesome on Saturday, June 19th!

The show is at the Doug Fir Lounge all ages, free, and open to the public.

Not only will there be 40 amazing crafters from all over the country, Hello Craft is setting up a Make Something Awesome table, so you can get your craft on, too, with make and take projects from embroidery to hand pressed buttons!
