Peter Sid makes beautiful, eco-friendly light fixtures and furniture out of reclaimed materials. He was kind enough to answer my 5 Questions!

1. Tell me about how you got started crafting.
My experience working with my hands has taken many forms over the years…I Guess it would have to be Legos as a kid. I loved them and the use of my hand translated into different hobbies as I grew up.

For a while I created stop motion animation, taught a model rocket building class at a summer camp and made props for student films.

When I moved to Los Angeles, My crafting moved into woodworking and furniture design. Lighting and metal work has been my latest endeavor.

2. What draws you to eco-friendly materials?
To me it just makes sense. Eco is the future, and I am very much interested in looking forward and not behind. My aesthetic has always been less is more, and I think that carries over into my choice of materials. Why be wasteful, when we can use what we have.

3. What inspires you?
It comes from everywhere—local architecture, music theory, cooking, graphic design, art. My favorite designer has always been George Nakashima—his work helped shape modern American design and in many ways is timeless. It’s amazing to me that several years after his passing, people are still taken by the simplicity of his work.

In all these influences, one thing shines through… less is more. I am constantly striving to strip my designs of unnecessary elements. More times than not, people fall in love with the simplicity of my work.

4. Who are your crafty heroes?
I have to go with Wendell and the crew at Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories, a company that provides craft or “makers” kits to people. They have lots of projects, but some of their most popular work with LEDs. If I hadn’t found their kits, this project would never have been possible.

5. Where can folks find your work?
Come visit me on Twitter – I’m @petersiddesign – and on my website.

Hat tip to my pal Taylen for sending this link! Shaun and Tawny Reynolds’ company Sundrop Jewelry uses passive solar power to create gorgeous recycled glass jewelry! They’re super-transparant about their materials and sourcing over on their blog, which makes me love them even more!

On the blog, they talk about everything from where they get their silver findings to the impact of shipping and what they’re doing to improve all of it. It’s refreshing to see a company so open about its processes. I love how on the level they are about everything – they admit areas that could use improvement right alongside great news about how they’re lightening their business’ footprint.

Of course, the part I’m most enamored with is how they form those lovely drops. Check out this totally rad video of the process:

What a simple setup, and the results are just beautiful! They stock earrings, belly buttons rings, necklaces, and wine charms in their online store as well as in bunches of shops around North America.

Over at Ecolocalizer, Rhonda and I are working on a fun project! We’ve realized that our neighborhoods have a lot in common. She lives in the Bayview area of San Francisco and I’m over in Edgewood, just east of downtown Atlanta. We’re exploring the ups and downs of trying to live sustainably in our respective areas and hoping to learn from each other at the same time.

He talked all about making sustainable living accessible to everyone. The Rhizome Collective and the book he wrote with Stacy Pettigrew focus on DIY solutions to food, water, and energy security problems. You can check out my notes on the talk over at my post on Ecolocalizer!

So there are two really cool events coming up in Atlanta this month that I wanted to post about. Both are sustainable-living themed and look like they’re going to be a lot of fun!

Sustainable Living Roadshow – Sept 20-21
The Sustainable Living Roadshow is touring the country in biofuelled vehicles spreading the word about green living. They’re hitting Emory University on the 20th and 21st! I’m a little worried that I won’t be able to make this one, since the 20th is the Strut AND the Munny show at MINT Gallery. If I can move at all on Sunday, though, I want to go check it out!

Farmers Market Bike Rally – September 27
September is Local Food Month, and three Atlanta markets are teaming up for a bike rally to showcase the goodness of local food! The rally starts and ends at the Green Market in Piedmont Park and hits two other markets along the way. There’s even music and a picnic lunch afterward!
