Relieve cold and flu symptoms naturally with homemade, vegan natural remedies.
Since cold and flu season is in full effect, I wanted to share a recent piece that I wrote for Eat Drink Better. It’s about healing foods to help fight cold and flu, keep you comfortable if you do get sick, and boost your immune system so you get better faster.
One of the vegan natural remedies on this list – tomato tea – is so effective and soothing that I’m going to be featuring it here on Friday in lieu of a Friday Cocktail. The list below compiles several natural remedies for cold and flu that I’ve been seeing lately along with some old favorites that have worked very well for me and my family.
On top of these food-based remedies, I have found that using my neti pot helps flush out the ick, and a humidifier helps all of us (Darrol included!) sleep better when we’re dealing with a stuffy nose. I’d love to hear about your favorite natural remedies, too. Darrol is in school, so we are getting hit with germs left and right over here!
1. Tomato Tea
Tomato tea might sound a little gross, but this natural cold remedy is basically a soothing mug of tomato soup. It’s packed with mix-ins that help boost your immune system and help address those symptoms that are causing you discomfort.
2. Rosemary Wellness Simmer
This natural cold remedy isn’t one that you eat, but it is food-based. It also makes your house smell amazing as its healing antibacterial properties help your body fight those nasties!
3. Ayurvedic Tea
This ginger and holy basil tea supports your immune system and eases cold symptoms. You might have trouble finding holy basil – also known as tulsi – at the store, but you can order it online to have handy in case you come down with a cold.
4. Apple Cider Vinegar Water
Did your cold come with a fever? Those fever chills are no fun at all. Try this mix of apple cider vinegar and water to help bring down your fever naturally. It’s not the most delicious drink, but after a few sips, it goes down pretty easily, and it’s worth it for some relief when you’re feeling crappy!
Do you have any favorite vegan natural remedies? Tell me your favorite in the comments!

I’ve never tried natual remedies (DayQuil all the way!) but that tomato tea & apple cider vinegar water sounds so interesting! Knock on wood, no colds this season…but definitely something to try if it does happen!
