This sparkling elderflower screwdriver is a surprisingly basic cocktail. No muddling, no shaking. You just pour, mix, and serve.
When I think of screwdrivers, I think of something that Peggy Olson said on Mad Men when they were working on cocktail ideas for a liquor account: “You need three ingredients for a cocktail. Vodka and Mountain Dew is an emergency.” I certainly didn’t want an emergency on my hands, so this sparkling elderflower screwdriver recipe has four ingredients. Crisis averted!
Earlier this month, my mom came to stay at our house for about a week. Dave and I had tickets to four Phish shows – two here in town, and two out of town – and mom came up to watch over Darrol Henry for us.
My mom is a really low-maintenance house guest. She stays here a lot, and all that she asks is that we keep orange juice and hummus in the fridge for her and cashews in the pantry. Easy peasy. After her last visit, there was quite a bit of juice left in the bottle, begging to be used in a refreshing cocktail recipe. How could I say no?
I don’t do a lot of bottled juice-based cocktails, and a screwdriver recipe just felt right. There was still elderflower liqueur in my cabinet from making sangria and that raspberry shandy, and I thought that would be a nice addition. It was!
Most elderflower liqueurs are vegan, but DeKuyper may or may not be. The company hasn’t been super forthcoming about what’s in all of their products, and they may also use casein – a milk protein – in their labels. There are lots of other elderflower liqueurs available, though, so don’t feel like you’re stuck with DeKuyper. St-Germain is vegan and available at most liquor stores, and there are plenty of other options.
