Dave went to a coffee shop!
After his run on Saturday, Dave went to Hodgepodge to grab a coffee for his walk home. Hodgepodge has a couple of locations here in Atlanta, and their menu includes some great vegan options.
I love their turmeric latte, which is coffee free and so spicy and delicious. They also always offer a few vegan baked goods. Their veggie hand pies are also vegan.
We called my sister!
My sister, Amanda, is a huge Talkin' Tofu fan, so this week, we gave her a call to talk about drinks. Dave, my sister, and I all love a fizzy drink, so we were excited to talk seltzers and sodas.
I had just scored a bottle of grapefruit Topo Chico that I couldn't wait to tell her about and which she is excited to try. The grapefruit was from natural flavor, not juice, so this was like Topo Chico meets La Croix, not like Topo Chico meets Spindrift.
I'm definitely into this seltzer and will get it again next time I see a bottle!
Her friend Stacy, who is also a fan of the show, was with her, and they were planning to muddle oranges into cocktails after a lovely brunch.
On the call, Stacy mentioned that she is a fan of my air fryer sushi, which I definitely recommend everyone try. Air fryer sushi is so much fun to make and eat!
News: JUST Egg is coming to Europe!
Normally, our news items about exciting new foods are about things debuting in Europe that we hope to one day get here in the U.S. This week, though, that theme is on its head.
Why has Europe had to wait three years for JUST Egg? Regulations. The company is waiting on regulatory approval now, which they expect to get later this year.
Germany, Italy and the Netherlands will the the first EU countries to get JUST Egg.
If you can get your hands on JUST Egg, I highly recommend that you use it to make the vegan corn pudding recipe from My Quiet Kitchen. It is top notch!
We ate tofu Caesar salad! (sort of)
You can consider this salad a mini review of Simple Truth Plant Based Caesar Dressing, which I picked up at the store recently. Really the only thing about this salad that was like a Caesar was the dressing.
We had beds of romaine lettuce topped with tomato, avocado, and roasted broccoli. For a protein, I made a batch of my baked chicken fried tofu.
Y'all, this salad was an absolute dream. Dave and I both loved it, and my only regret was that I didn't make bigger salads, because I wanted to keep eating this forever.
The Simple Truth Plant Based Caesar Dressing really shone in this dish. The dressing was bright, creamy, and salty. It really his all of the notes you'd expect from a Caesar, and I'll definitely be getting it again.
Bonus tip: it makes a stellar dip for fries.
Ben & Jerry's Change the Whirled
Dave and I have been looking for this ice cream since it was announced this winter. We finally found a pint at the store! I was so excited that I sent Dave a photo from the freezer aisle.
This nondairy ice cream is a collaboration between Colin Kaepernick and Ben & Jerry's. It's a caramel ice cream with fudge chips and graham cracker and chocolate cookie swirls. The ice cream base is sunflower butter.
We were excited about this ice cream because it sounded freaking delicious but also because it supports a great cause. All of Kaepernick's proceeds from sales are supporting his Know Your Rights Camp.
But let's get back to the ice cream, y'all.
I loved this flavor! Normally, Ben & Jerry's mix-ins are easy to distinguish in the pint. I can dig out and eat all of the fudge fish from my pint of Phish Food, for example.
In Change the Whirled, everything is in one mega swirl, and it was a delight! I loved how the sweet, caramel base worked with the crunchy chocolate chips and the texture from both kinds of cookie.
Dave wasn't as big a fan, though he did eat three bowls this week, so it's not like he hated it. He said it tasted too sweet to him, which we think may have been because caramel is a pretty sweet flavor to start with.
I didn't get an overly sweet vibe from this ice cream, though, so who knows! Personal tastes are so personal.
