Ben & Jerry's Change the Whirled

Dave and I have been looking for this ice cream since it was announced this winter. We finally found a pint at the store! I was so excited that I sent Dave a photo from the freezer aisle.

This nondairy ice cream is a collaboration between Colin Kaepernick and Ben & Jerry's. It's a caramel ice cream with fudge chips and graham cracker and chocolate cookie swirls.

The ice cream base is sunflower butter, which makes this an allergy-friendly option, something that vegan Ben & Jerry's fans have been asking for since they launched their non-dairy line.

In fact, there isn't a dairy version of this ice cream. Kaepernick is vegan, so it makes sense that his ice cream would be, too.

We were excited about this ice cream, because it sounded freaking delicious, but also because it supports a great cause. All of Kaepernick's proceeds from sales are supporting his Know Your Rights Camp.

But let's get back to the ice cream, y'all.

I loved this flavor! Normally, Ben & Jerry's mix-ins are easy to distinguish in the pint. I can dig out and eat all of the fudge fish from my pint of Phish Food, for example.

In Change the Whirled, everything is in one mega swirl, and it was a delight! I loved how the sweet, caramel base worked with the crunchy chocolate chips and the texture from both kinds of cookie.

Dave wasn't as big a fan, though he did eat three bowls this week, so it's not like he hated it. He said it tasted too sweet to him, which we think may have been because caramel is a pretty sweet flavor to start with.

I didn't get an overly sweet vibe from this ice cream, though, so who knows! Personal tastes are so personal.

    The ingredients

Like I mentioned above, this ice cream is sunflower milk-based, but what else is in the pint? According to the Ben & Jerry's website, Change the Whirled contains:

SUNFLOWER MILK (WATER, ROASTED SUNFLOWER SEEDS), LIQUID SUGAR (SUGAR, WATER), COCONUT OIL, SUGAR, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, CORN SYRUP, CANOLA OIL, SOYBEAN OIL, CORN STARCH, WHEAT FLOUR, COCOA (PROCESSED WITH ALKALI), WATER, GRAHAM FLOUR, PEA PROTEIN, COCOA, SUNFLOWER LECITHIN, SALT, NATURAL FLAVORS (SESAME), MOLASSES, SOY LECITHIN, TAPIOCA STARCH, GUAR GUM, MALT EXTRACT, LOCUST BEAN GUM, BAKING SODA, CARRAGEENAN, CARAMEL COLOR, VANILLA EXTRACT.

Thank you so much for this review of Change the Whirled. Sounds way too sweet for me, six sugar sources, and the soy and canola ingredients (not digestible for many), are not best for me. Saved me a big disappointment.
