Vegan Phish Food Review
Y'all, Phish Food was my absolute favorite ice cream before I went vegan. I used to eat it straight out of the pint. So this non-dairy version had a lot of memories to live up to.
And it DID! This is spot on like the Phish Food that I used to demolish in college:
- creamy chocolate ice cream
- rich, fudgy fishes
- a sticky swirl of marshmallow fluff
- just the right amount of sticky-sweet caramel.
I am seriously obsessed.
And Dave, who doesn't even like chocolate ice cream, said he loves it, too! He said that it might be his new favorite Ben & Jerry's flavor. That is high praise, friends.
I am over the moon and can't wait to eat it every day for the rest of my life.
The ingredients
So, what's in vegan Phish Food? According to the Ben & Jerry's website, it contains:
ALMOND MILK (WATER, ALMONDS), LIQUID SUGAR (SUGAR, WATER), CORN SYRUP, SUGAR, COCONUT OIL, COCOA (PROCESSED WITH ALKALI), WATER, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, BROWN SUGAR, CHICKPEA FLOUR, PEA PROTEIN, ISOLATED SOY PROTEIN, GUM ARABIC, SUNFLOWER LECITHIN, VANILLA EXTRACT, NATURAL FLAVOR, PECTIN, SOY LECITHIN, CARAMELIZED SUGAR SYRUP, SEA SALT, GUAR GUM, LOCUST BEAN GUM.
The Non-Dairy Phish Food appears to be gluten-free on top of being dairy-free!
It's not every day that you get to compare the exact same vegan product, side-by-side, so let's look at what's in the dairy version of Phish Food:
CREAM, WATER, SKIM MILK, LIQUID SUGAR (SUGAR, WATER), CORN SYRUP, SUGAR, COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, COCONUT OIL, BUTTER (CREAM, SALT), EGG YOLKS, EGG WHITES, VANILLA EXTRACT, NATURAL FLAVOR, GUAR GUM, PECTIN, COCOA, SALT, CARRAGEENAN, BAKING SODA, MILK, SOY LECITHIN.
There are a lot of similar ingredients here! The non-dairy version contains some extra thickeners to replace the cream and the egg products. The bulk of these seem to be pretty close, though.
