This Bloody Mary recipe uses a gingery homemade Bloody Mary mix. Use the mix to make the cocktail or drink it on its own, with or without pickled okra!
This recipe is a fun mix of Asian and Southern flavors. The homemade Bloody Mary mix uses ginger and Sriracha in place horseradish and Tabasco, and you top the whole thing off with a dilly pickled okra. You won't be sorry!
I know, I can't stop thinking about pickled okra! Maybe I created this whole cocktail recipe just so I'd have an excuse to make another batch of the okra recipe I demoed at the Freedom Farmers Market. Hey! Speaking of!

Of course, you can also buy pre-made pickled okra to use in this Bloody Mary recipe. Heck, if okra's not your thing, you can make the cocktail without it. Flexible is the name of the game here.
Ginger Bloody Mary Recipe (or Make a Virgin Mary)
Yield: 1 cocktail
- about ½ cup Homemade Bloody Mary Mix (see below)
- 1 ½ ounces good vodka (optional)
- 1 piece quick pickled okra, for garnish (optional)
- Fill a rocks glass with ice, add the vodka and mix, and stir. Stick your piece of okra in the glass, and you're ready to sip. Or serve.
- For a Virgin Mary: Just pour the mix over ice, garnish with okra, and drink up!
Homemade Bloody Mary Mix
Yield: about 2 cups, enough for 4 cocktails
- 2 cups vegetable juice or tomato juice
- 2-3 teaspoons minced ginger (use more or less, depending on how gingery you like things)
- 2 cloves minced garlic
- juice of ½ a fresh lime
- ½-1 teaspoon Sriracha sauce, to taste
- Put everything but the hot sauce into the blender, and puree until it's nice and smooth. I had the best results when I pulsed, rather than just blending, because the garlic and ginger pieces like to float in the juices.
- Stir in the Sriracha a bit at a time until you reach your desired level of heat. You can store your homemade Bloody Mary mix in a glass container for up to a week, so this is a good recipe to make ahead for Sunday brunch.
