This week on the show, we talk about hush puppies and eat Delight Soy vegan chicken breasts!
Before we get to the Delight Soy patties and the hush puppies, though, we talked about towels. Because this is a food podcast.
We got Turkish towels! They're thin yet absorbent and shockingly warm. And huge! And colorful with fringe.
I am super into them. Dave describes them as "thin but thick," and I agree.
My Earl Gray renaissance
This past weekend, I got to remember how good Earl Gray tea is! Normally, I'm a chai-drinker, but we ran out, so I busted into my backup stash of tea, which was Earl Gray.
I feel like Earl Gray gets lumped in as just another black tea, but it has such a lovely, delicate flavor! If you haven't had it in a while, I encourage you to try it again.
Maybe with a splash of oat milk, why not? Or maybe in a cocktail, if you're into that kind of thing!
Let's read a letter!
Really, this is less a letter and more a message. Pamela writes:
How about Fu-heads instead of To-heads? Take it in a different direction.
You can’t do Talkin Heads, that’s already taken.
Thank you for writing in, Pamela!
Dave thinks that Fu-heads should be reserved for fans of kung fu. What do you think?
Vegan wings at Donatos
VegNews reports that pizza chain, Donatos, launched cauliflower wings! Not all of the wings are vegan, so check out their nutrition page, where they list top allergens, including egg and milk, to make sure before you order.
Now, maybe Dave did think the headline said Dominos when he chose it, but this is still big news! Donatos has hundreds of locations across the U.S.
None in Atlanta yet, though. Get on it, Donatos! I want those wings!
In addition to the vegan wings, which come in an array of flavors, they also have a vegan crust and vegan sausage for your pizza. No vegan cheese, though, which is an odd choice.
We ate hush puppies!
Y'all, I have been trying to nail a crunch-on-the-outside, soft-and-moist-on-the-inside air fryer hush puppies recipe for so long. And I did it!
It's tricky, because you can't use a runny batter, but a thick batter ends up too crumbly. It took some doing, but it finally worked.
I love floating these in chili. They add such a nice texture and make it even more hearty.
Dave loves them as a drive-by snack. I keep them in a lidded container on the kitchen counter, and he just grabs a couple to nosh on as he walks into his office in the afternoon.
A hush puppy is basically a little ball of cornbread batter. I hope you get to make my hush puppies recipe, because I am thrilled with how they came out!
Soy Delight Patties
Do y'all remember when Dave shared that news item about Beyond launching new versions of the Beyond Burger? And then I went on a real rant about how what we need is a good, vegan chicken breast?
Well, listener Leigh suggested that we try Soy Delight Patties. These are unbreaded vegan chicken patties, and they're what Whole Foods shreds up to make its mock chicken salad.
Delight Soy is based in North Carolina, and they make vegan chicken patties and nuggets. They also make burgers, energy bars, cookies, and vegan pulled pork, which I have no seen for sale anywhere around here. But I would like to eat all of those things!
These patties come in a pack of five, and the package didn't have cooking instructions. I pan fried them, but you can also warm them up in the microwave.
Y'all, these patties are ah-mazing! I served them with a red wine Dijon cream sauce, and it was a real dream!
The texture and flavor are both fantastic. I don't know that the flavor is chicken-like, but it's delightful, and I want more of it.
Dave thought the patties were good, but he felt like it tasted fried. I didn't get a fried vibe from it at all, though. I wonder if he was reacting to the fact that I pan fried them?
The patties are thinner than a conventional chicken breast, but they will work well in a lot of vegan chicken situations.
We agreed that this definitely addresses some of the scenarios where I'd use a vegan chicken breast, but we still need more options in this department.
Where to listen
Thank you so much for listening (or reading!). We record these episodes for you, and we'd love to hear from you.
