This week on Talkin' Tofu, we eat a vegan wedge salad and review Favorite Day Non-Dairy Peanut Butter Ice Cream and the scorpion pepper dark chocolate bar from French Broad Chocolates.
Also, Dave made Gatorade slushies after his long run, and he slurped his a lot just right on mic. Like the pros do.

News: Yeah Burger's plant-based menu
Atlanta burger joint, Yeah Burger, has been closed since lockdown began, and it's planning to reopen with a fully plant-based menu!
Yeah Burger was already a very vegan-friendly spot. Their bun was vegan, and they offered both Beyond and Impossible patties along with a house-made vegan burger. Dave reminded me that they also had Beyond sausages in a bun!
My Yeah Burger fave was always their Brussels sprouts, which were vegan if you left off the cheese. I hope that a fully vegan version of those make it to the new menu!
As of this writing, they haven't announced when they will reopen, but the AJC reports that they are hiring. I have signed up for their email list, so we will be able to eat there as soon as they open back up!
Russian wedge salad
I have a proper version of this recipe coming in a few weeks, but the basics are:
- roasted or air fryer beets
- homemade rye croutons
- homemade vegan Russian dressing
- vegan bacon bits (I used Bacos.)
- pickled red onion
- all over a big ol' wedge of iceberg lettuce.
Y'all, Dave and I are obsessed with this salad! The earthy beets and crunchy croutons are so lovely with the tart-tangy-creamy dressing. Those smoky bacon bits and savory red onions really round things out. And that hunk of iceberg adds a nice freshness.
I am so excited to share the full recipe as soon as I'm able to shoot it!
Favorite Day Non-Dairy Peanut Butter Ice Cream review
Back in late March, we talked about Target's plan to launch oat milk ice cream bars as part of their new Favorite Day line, and they have done it! And we ate some!
Dave grabbed a four-pack of the Peanut Butter Oat Milk Bars. The peanut butter oat milk ice cream is coated in vegan chocolate with crunchy peanut pieces.
Y'all, Dave and I were not wowed by these.
I thought that the chocolate coating and crunchy peanuts were great, but the ice cream didn't have much peanut butter flavor. I was really expecting a boom pow peanut butter punch, and this bar didn't deliver. The ice cream's texture was good, but it could have used a flavor boost.
Dave felt like both the chocolate and the ice cream were let-downs. He agreed that the ice cream was bland and added that he thought the chocolate was also pretty flavorless.
Target's non-dairy peanut butter ice cream bars were fine, but not great. Neither of us would complain if someone offered us one, but we aren't going to buy this flavor again. We may try other flavors, though!
Scorpion Pepper Bar from French Broad Chocolates
French Broad Chocolates is an Asheville-based chocolate company that features sustainably-sourced chocolate and has a lot of vegan options. Here in Atlanta, you can find their bars at Xocolatl inside of Krog Street Market. They also sell their bars online.
A friend on Instagram shared a picture of this bar, and I was immediately on a mission. I love spicy chocolate!
Scorpion peppers pack quite a bit of heat, so I was ready for a whomp of spice, but this bar's flavor was very well balanced. It was creamy and bittersweet with a warm heat at the end that wasn't overpowering.
Dave agreed that the flavor was excellent and went in for seconds! He's been grabbing squares to snack on ever since.
I'd call this a mild to medium heat level. If you like a little spice in your desserts, this bar is definitely worth getting. At $10, it's a bit pricey, but the flavor is so powerful, we've really only needed a few squares at a time to satisfy ourselves.
