Why Make Your Own Sports Drink?
I developed this homemade sports drink recipe years ago when I was going through marathon training with my running partner. It’s just as nice after a regular workout, though!
It’s also a nice, cooling whole-fruit treat on a hot day.
Back when I was marathon training, we had a brutal summer in Atlanta. That, combined with my running schedule, meant that for weeks it felt like I just couldn’t drink enough. Water helped short term, but I felt like I was operating in a perpetual state of thirst. It was no good for my endurance and frankly a little annoying.
My old running partner’s dad is a doctor, and he suggested that I needed more electrolytes. He recommended Gatorade. That’s a totally reasonable recommendation, but I’m not crazy about a drink full of artificial colors and added sugars, if I can avoid it. This homemade sports drink was the solution!
Homemade Sports Drink
When I asked around about more natural ways to get hydrated, a lot of people recommended coconut water, but y’all. I do not like plain coconut water. I really want to like it, but it’s just not happening!
Then, I remembered a drink I had at a resort in Jamaica. Every morning, they’d serve blended melon over ice. There was honeydew, cantaloupe, and watermelon. The watermelon was my favorite.
What if I blended up that less-than-thrilling coconut water with watermelon?
Friends, it was a game-changer. This watermelon-coconut water sports drink is naturally sweet, super refreshing, and it was a huge help in my distance running recovery.
The best part, though, is that it basically takes seconds to make in a blender. No high speed blender needed!
How to Make & Store It
To make this recipe super quick, I recommend splashing out and buying pre-cut watermelon at the store. If you have the time to carve a watermelon, that’s definitely going to be cheaper, but we’re going for speed here.
To make this, just toss some cubed watermelon with a little bit of coconut water into your blender. Puree until you have a smooth mix, then serve over ice.
You can multiply this recipe, if you want to stash a few days’ worth of sports drink in your fridge. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three to four days. If it separates, that’s totally normal. Just give it a good shake before pouring.
If you’re serving this chilled, you can skip the ice or use it — totally your call!
Easy Homemade Sports Drink: Watermelon Coconut Water
- 1 cup watermelon cubes – seeds removed
- 1/2 cup coconut water
- Place the ingredients in the blender, and puree until smooth. Chill until you're ready to serve, or drink right away over ice.
