This week on the show, we figure out what to make for dinner, talk oatmeal cookie sandwiches, and review the Plant Based Queso from Simple Truth.
But first, we talk a lot about whether or not garlic deters garden pests. It turns out that it does, but not the way that I thought it did. If you want to read about using cloves and garlic water to deter pests, this article from Daven Midtown has lots of good info.
Simple Truth Plant Based Queso Review
All three of these dips use blended cauliflower and almonds as the base, then layer on seasonings. The queso adds in almond butter for extra creamy texture.
Dave and I both enjoyed this dip! For me, I didn't get a strong queso/nacho cheese flavor from it. The second ingredient in this dip is bell pepper, and to me it tasted like a deliciously creamy bell pepper dip.
One that I'd definitely eat again! It just didn't give me plant based queso vibes.
Dave, who normally isn't into queso in general, loved this dip and said it did give him queso vibes! He said he couldn't stop eating it and that it was his favorite of the three dips.
We both loved all three of the Simple Truth Plant Based dips.
I have already gotten the cilantro jalapeno one again, because prior to trying the queso, it was Dave's favorite. He said that his favorite now is the queso.
The Buffalo dip was my favorite of the three.
Despite it not really reminding me of cheese, I do think this would make some killer nachos. You could use it in my nachos recipe in place of the queso that it calls for.
What's for dinner?
Wow, did we go on about what to make for dinner! My initial pitch was sausage, peppers, and onions with rice. This is a weeknight dish that I make often in the air fryer. Here's the quick and dirty:
- Slice four Beyond Sausages into 1" pieces.
- Slice one or two bell peppers and a sweet onion into strips.
- Throw everything into the air fryer with a little bit of oil.
- Air fry at 400? for eight to 12 minutes, shaking once, until the sausage browns.
But then! Dave reminded me that I'd promised baked macaroni and cheese to the child. And I'm not going to disappoint a child!
Our compromise was to put broccoli into the macaroni, like we usually do, but also air fry and add sliced Beyond Sausage to it.
And I'll spoil you, since I'm writing this after dinner: it was a hit! The kid said that it's his new favorite dinner.
Oatmeal Cookie Sandwiches
This was the first installment of Dave's new favorite segment, "'Til Tofu Us Part". The idea is to choose a food -- in this case oatmeal cookies -- and find its ideal partner.
I didn't fully get the rules at first, as is very clear when you listen to the episode, but I'm all in now.
We each created a submission. Dave made his cookie sandwich with vegan whipped cream. Mine had whipped peanut butter frosting as the filling.
We both agreed that mine was the winner, so I'll be getting that recipe fleshed out and up on the blog as soon as possible!
