Simple Truth Strawberry Graham Oat Milk Ice Cream
Dave got us this pint of Simple Truth oat milk ice cream as part of our grocery order a few weeks ago. It's a strawberry oat milk ice cream with pieces of graham cracker in it.
Y'all, I loved this ice cream! It was soft and fluffy, and I thought the cookie-like graham cracker pieces paired up with that experience very well.
I will say that the strawberry flavor on this ice cream is mild. As Dave pointed out, we aren't talking about strawberry ice cream with big strawberry pieces here. This is more the "pink" strawberry ice cream, like you'd find in the strawberry portion of a Neapolitan.
Dave wasn't as big a fan. The kid and I got into this pint first, and apparently Dave's bowl was very light on the graham cracker pieces.
As a "pink" strawberry ice cream, he liked this a lot. But he was pretty bummed about the lack of graham pieces, since he was looking forward to those.
We will definitely get this ice cream again, though! The texture and flavor were great, even if the graham was a bit inconsistent from bowl to bowl.
What's it made from?
Like the name suggests, this ice cream is oat milk-based. While some flavors of Simple Truth Oat Milk Ice Cream, like the Maple Pecan, are gluten-free, the Strawberry Graham is not, because of the graham cracker swirl.
Here are the ingredients, according to Kroger's website:
WATER, SUGAR, GRAHAM CRACKER SWIRL: (GRAHAM CRACKER CRUMB [ENRICHED FLOUR {WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, RIBOLFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID}, GRAHAM FLOUR, SUGAR, SUNFLOWWER OIL, MOLASSES], PEANUT OIL, SUGAR, COCONUT OIL, SALT, SUNFLOWER LECITHIN, NATURAL FLAVOR AND CINNAMON), STRAWBERRIES, COCONUT OIL, TAPIOCA SYRUP SOLIDS, DEXTROSE, OAT CONCENTRATE, PEA PROTEIN, CONTAINS 1% OR LESS OF THE FOLLOWING: CELLULOSE GEL, LOCUST BEAN GUM, GUAR GUM, CELLULOSE GUM, NATURAL FLAVOR, LEMON JUICE CONCENTRATE, FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICE (FOR COLOR).
Is oat milk ice cream healthier?
I feel like vegan desserts get more scrutiny than conventional when it comes to health. Somewhere along the way, vegan and healthy became linked in a way that they don't need to be.
Sugar, salt, and fat make food -- vegan or not -- taste good. Often, when creating a vegan version of an animal food, you add in these elements to enhance the flavor and texture.
In my homemade coffee ice cream, for example, I use full fat coconut milk as the base. Because coconut milk contains so much fat, if gives you a similar, creamy texture to ice creams made with dairy milk and cream.
Let's compare the nutrition of the Strawberry Graham Oat Milk Ice Cream with Breyer's Vanilla, which is not vegan.
As you can see, the Simple Truth Oat Milk Ice Cream has more calories and fat than the Breyer's. It doesn't have any cholesterol, however, and contains a gram of fiber per serving.
However, if you compare it to a more boutique ice cream, like Ben & Jerry's, it stacks up better:
In this case, the Simple Truth is lower in calories and in fat. And it's still delivering that gram of fiber and zero cholesterol.
The good news is, we don't eat ice cream to be healthy! I prefer the oat milk variety, because it aligns with my ethics. Veganism isn't a diet, after all. It's a lifestyle centered around loving animals.
