This week on the show, we'll talk about air frying Impossible patties, vegan pizza from Your Pie, and eat two kinds of Vegan Rob's Puffs.
How to air fry frozen Impossible patties
That huge order from GTFO It's Vegan just keeps on giving! Dave included a 10-pack of frozen Impossible patties, which allowed me to really test the ideal way to air fry them.
Here's what you do:
- Do not add anything else to the air fryer. You can do three patties at once, maximum, because you don't want overlap. Overlap is the enemy of good results here.
- Air fry at 400° F for 12-15 minutes, depending on how well done you want your burgs.
Dave had his burger on a bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and avocado.
I had mine over salad greens with pickle slices, tomato, green onion, and vegan ranch dressing. And I put the fries on my burger salad instead of having them on the side. Recommended!
Orange Mango Spindrift
If you listen to the pod regularly, you probably know that I'm obsessed with Spindrift seltzers. Almost a year ago, I quit drinking alcohol, and Spindrift has become one of my go-to "special drinks" to replace that glass of wine at the end of the day.
I'd resisted the Orange Mango, because it costs more than the other flavors, but since we were going on vacation, I splashed out. And it's a delight!
It's definitely worth a try, if you're a Spindrift fan.
Costco vegan jalapeño mac and cheese
This week's news item comes from VegNews. Costco is testing a vegan jalapeño macaroni and cheese at locations in California and Hawaii.
Chef Ayinde Howell's recipe for Jalapeño & Cheddar Mac & Yease is already available online from iEatGrass, and adding it to Costco stores is going to extend its reach even further. Vegan mac for everyone!
The mac won't be available at the food counter. These are big ol', 32 ounce take-and-bake trays.
Excuse me, while I go renew the ol' Costco membership in anticipation!
Vegan pizza from Your Pie
We went up to Lake Lanier for spring break, and I was excited to see that there was a Your Pie location not far from our hotel. I'd heard so much great stuff about their vegan pizzas, so we were super jazzed to order a couple of their 10-inch Build-Your-Own pies!
Dave got his pizza on white crust with olive oil, vegan cheese, broccoli, and jalapeño. The kid and I split a wheat pie with vegan cheese, marinara, broccoli, red onion, and basil.
Y'all, I hate to say this, but this pizza was a bit of a letdown.
I did like the crust, sauce, and cheese, but they were so stingy with the toppings! I didn't get to take a picture, but trust me when I say that there was just a scattering of sad, tiny broccoli pieces and hardly any hint of anything else, except for the jalapeño on Dave's which was generous.
We also ordered a Greek salad with balsamic dressing and no feta cheese, which was also sadly lacking in toppings.
The container was full of mostly romaine lettuce with a few pieces of pepperoncini and some black olives. No onion. No kalamata olives. No tomato, even!
I have to wonder whether this was an issue with this specific location. Friends have shared photos of their orders on Instagram in the past, and their pizzas and salads didn't look sad at all!
Dave also surprised us with a cup of their vegan Almond Berry Crisp ice cream, which was a real treat! The ice cream was berry flavored and had bits of oatmeal crisp mixed in.
A nice ending to a pretty disappointing meal.
Vegan Rob's Puffs review
Vegan Rob's makes eight varieties of puffs, and today we are trying two of them:
- Moringa Puffs
- Cheddar Puffs
While we were talking about it, we realized that Dave and I have both also had their Cauliflower Puffs, but it was long ago, so let's not consider this an official review of those.
As of this writings, all Vegan Rob's Puffs are sorghum-based. In the episode, we mentioned an article that Becky wrote a long, long time ago about sorghum for How Stuff Works.
The texture of these was light and crispy. Think cheese puffs, but with a different flavors.
The Moringa Puffs were lightly sweet, and the ingredients list included ginger, turmeric, and lemon, which neither of us could really taste.
They sort of had a vibe of a less-sweet kettle corn. If you medium like kettle corn but find it overly sweet, I think you'll love these puffs!
We are a house divided on the Cheddar Puffs. I loved them. So cheesy! A bit salty, but as a treat, they were super delicious, and I will definitely be eating them again.
Dave thought that they were too cheesy and really disliked them.
We are going to try the rest of the Vegan Rob's Puffs and do another episode on all eight, so stay tuned for that!
