One of the winter veggies I have the hardest time working my way through is sweet potatoes. Don’t get me wrong: I love sweet potatoes! The trouble is, my husband does not so much love them. I’ve found a few ways that I can sneak sweet potatoes onto his plate. For some reason, he doesn’t like sweet potatotes baked, mashed, or roasted, but he loves them as oven fries. He also seems to dig the sweet potato oatmeal muffins that I make sometimes.
The trouble is that in winter, our CSA gives us at least two giant sweet potatoes a week, and those two recipes are…well…they are two recipes! Since the people in our house weren’t eating these suckers, I decided it was time to feed them to our dog Jenna instead!
Sweet potato is great for dogs! They’re full of healthy vitamins that are healthy for pups, inside and out. Jenna loves sweet potato. When I occasionally bake one for myself, I always cut up a couple of bites and set them aside to cool as a treat for her.
Making dog treats really isn’t that different from making cookies. You bake them for longer, so they harden into biscuits, but really if you can make cookies, you can make dog treats. The dough for these even kind of tastes like cookie dough that could use a little sugar.
Since these treats aren’t packed with preservatives like the store-bought sort, you’ll want to feed them to your dog within a week or two of making them and store them in the refrigerator.
Sweet Potato Dog Treats
Prep time: 10 minutes; Cook time: 35-45 minutes; Total time: 45-55 minutes; Yield: Around 2 dozen treats, depending on how small you make them.
- 1 sweet potato, cooked and peeled
- 2 1/2 cups oat flour (see below)
- 2 tablespoons flax meal + 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup peanut butter
- Preheat the oven to 350F.
- Mash ingredients together in a large bowl. You can use a fork, but I found that getting in there and using your hands to mash and knead the dough worked best.
- Form into flat cookies about 2 tablespoons at a time. For a smaller dog, you might want to make smaller treats by using 1 tablespoon at a time for your cookies. Just cut the baking time back to 25-35 minutes if you’re making smaller ones.
- Bake on ungreased cookie sheets for 40-50 minutes – until browned on the edges and quite hard – then allow to cool for at least 10 minutes before treating your pup. You want these to be more like biscuits than cookies. The less moisture is left in them after baking, the longer they will last. If you don’t give your dog treats very frequently, I’d store these in the fridge. They’ll keep for about a week out of the fridge and about two weeks refrigerated.
How to Make Oat Flour
Oat flour is actually just finely ground rolled oats, so there’s nothing special to buy here. Just toss your oats in the blender and let ‘er fly until it reaches a floury consistency. It’s OK if there are still a few pieces of oat left, as long as it’s mostly flour.
I used just over 3 cups of oats to make the 2 1/2 cups of oat flour for this recipe. You may need a bit more or less to yield the right amt of flour. Start with around 3 cups and blend more until you get the amount you need.
