Hey, y'all! Are you as obsessed as we are with vegan ice cream? This week on the show, we talk ginger granola, Plant Based Pizzeria, and try two new non-dairy flavors from Ben & Jerry's: Netflix & Chilll'd and Chocolate Salted 'n Swirled.
Plus, hear Becky delude herself briefly into thinking that she doesn't like sweets?
Dave's day job has been incredibly busy lately, and the day we recorded this episode, I barely saw him all day long! So we spent some time catching up before diving into what's cooking.
It was a day, y'all. Work for both of us has been bananas, and the kid has been a real trooper entertaining himself while we get everything done. Poor Dave ate his lunch standing at the kitchen counter, because he was so stressed.
The other thing making the week of recording pretty stressful is that the state of Georgia seems to have never received my mail-in ballot, so I was checking in on that throughout the day and making a backup plan to get up at the crack of dawn on election day to vote in person.
If you want to know how that went, Slate can fill you in.
Let's talk food, y'all.
Non dairy Netflix & Chilll'd review
The first flavor we'll talk about is the Netflix & Chilll'd. This one is a peanut butter base with pretzel swirls and fudge brownies.
Dave thought it was a nice, balanced treat. It had the perfect amount of chocolate for him, and he loved that dose of salty pretzel.
I also liked this one. The peanut butter base was rich and creamy, and the fudge pieces were decadent. My only wish for this ice cream was for more pretzel in my bowl. But I have sort of a salt tooth.
Dave disagrees and thinks that the Netflix & Chilll'd had the perfect amount of savory pretzel for him, so I think that depends on whether your palate leans toward sweet or salty.
After some discussion, we decided that what might be fun is to crumble some pretzels on top of a bowl of this ice cream. That would maintain the crunch and put the salt forward more.
We also discussed crumbling potato chips on top of the Chocolate Salted 'n Swirled, which we will talk about next!
Non dairy Chocolate Salted 'n Swirled review
Chocolate Salted 'n Swirled is an exclusive flavor, though we aren't totally clear what that means. We got these pints from Target, so maybe it means exclusive to that chain? Tell us if you've seen this pint anywhere else!
This ice cream has a chocolate base with chocolate sandwich cookies and a salted caramel swirl. And I loved it. I love ice cream with layers of chocolate, and this delivered all of the chocolate of my dreams.
Dave tried this one right before we recorded, and he didn't like it at all. He thought the ice cream was "too chocolatey". I have to disagree here. If you like a rich, creamy, dark chocolate ice cream, this base is for you.
He also thought that the sandwich cookies were too soggy and that the filling was too much like marshmallow in texture. I do agree that the cookies were soft, but I think the softness gave them a fudgy texture that I really enjoyed.
Dave also said he didn't think the caramel swirl had that bit of salt he was looking for. Now that I've had this ice cream a couple more times, I do have to agree here. The caramel was lovely, but I didn't get any salt from it in subsequent bowls.
Talk about a divisive ice cream! I'd say that if you are serious about chocolate, this ice cream will be right up your alley. If you're more like Dave and like a chocolate element offset by other flavors, you probably want a different pint.
Of the two, Dave's clear favorite was the Netflix & Chilll'd, while I am all in on that Chocolate Salted 'n Swirled. Which I guess is good news? Neither of us needs to share!
This week, I was working on my new favorite ginger granola. It's sweet, spicy, and crunchy with plenty of coconut and ginger flavors. I've been eating it over yogurt for breakfasts!
And if you know me, you know that the fact that I am actually eating breakfast at all is a miracle.
Dave has to confess right now that he hasn't eaten the granola yet. Even though he knew it was going to be on this week's rundown. Shame on you, Dave!
The upside to Dave not trying the granola yet is that I now have to make more granola for him to try, so I get to have more ginger granola in the house.
This week, we ordered takeout from a local pizza spot here in town: Plant Based Pizzeria. This place has been open since last year, and it's pretty shameful that we are just now getting around to trying it, but here we are.
And y'all, we are obsessed.
We got their Georgia Peach pizza and a Vegan Deluxe Flatbread.
First of all, this pizza actually has a crust that Dave and I can actually agree on. It's a spelt flour crust, and it's thin but hearty and flavorful without overpowering the cheese and toppings.
The Georgia Peach pizza is a real treat. It has vegan mozzarella, Beyond Sausage crumbles, roasted peaches, red onion, and jalapeno. We have already ordered it again since recording this episode.
The sweet peach was so perfect with the spicy sausage and that jalapeno to kick things up another notch. If you're in Atlanta, I can't recommend this pizza enough.
The flatbread was also delightful. Dave didn't get to try it, but I had some of the leftovers for lunch. They top the Vegan Deluxe flatbread with vegan mozzarella, bell pepper, summer squash, zucchini, mushrooms, black olives, and onions. It was a solid choice, if you're looking for lots of veggies.
Hey, you know what's great after a stellar slice of pizza? Ice cream!
