If you're a regular Talkin' Tofu listener, you probably heard Dave mention the new vegan Cookies & Creme Bon Bons from Trader Joe's in the news segment of the Deliciou Plant Based Pork episode a couple of weeks ago. I went out the very next day to grab a box, and it was a success!

    What did they taste like?

Trader Joe's Cookies and Creme Bon Bons are dairy-free. The ice cream is coconut based and coated in a vegan chocolate shell. I was excited to try these, because I love a chocolate-covered dessert!

We were a bit divided on our thoughts about these. We did agree on two things:

    1. There was no coconut flavor to these at all, despite them being coconut based.
    2. There were not enough cookies in the ice cream.

I thought the ice cream was lovely, though like I mentioned above, I do wish that it had more large cookie pieces in it.

Some of the bon bons in the box didn't have any large pieces of cookie in them at all. You could see little flecks of cookie, but their flavor didn't really come through unless you scored one with a big ol' piece.

For me, the rich chocolate coating was a nice texture and flavor contrast to the creamy ice cream, though.

Dave, though, was not a fan. He dinged them more for the lack of cookies than I did. Where he really disagreed, though, was on the ice cream and chocolate parts.

He called the ice cream filling "a subpar vanilla," saying that if there had been more cookies, that would have made sense. But given that some of these had no large cookies pieces inside at all, he felt like there was no reason for the ice cream to have so little flavor.

Dave also thought the chocolate was unremarkable.

After hearing Dave's thoughts, I did decide that the lack of cookies in a dessert billed as "cookies and cream" was a pretty big miss. But I liked the texture and flavor of these and would get them again.

Given Dave's feelings, though, I think I'll be on my own eating that next box of Trader Joe's Cookies and Creme Bon Bons.

    Price and packaging

The bon bons are balls of coconut-based cookies and cream ice cream coated in dark chocolate. They're flat on the bottom and come in a flat, hard plastic tray with a lid.

In typical Trader Joe's fashion, the plastic part of the packaging felt like overkill. But maybe the bon bons are more delicate than they seem?

Each bon bon is about the size of a small, fresh fig, and the box of six cost $3.99, as of this writing. It felt like an okay price for what you got, given their size!
